Sunday, December 11th, the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans meet for the third of four scheduled matches this season. This is the second game of baseball set with the Pelicans winning 128-117 on Friday.
Phoenix won the initial contest 124-122 on October 28th and will host again on December 17th
The Suns hold the advantage all-time winning 37 of the 70 matches versus the Pelicans. They played four times last season with the Suns winning three of the four contests. They met again in the first round with the Suns prevailing 4-2.
Phoenix Suns
My prior musings that Devin Booker looked worn out now make sense given the revelation he’s nursing a hamstring injury. Booker shot 5 of 17 from the field and 2 of 8 Friday for 14 points.
Despite Chris Paul being back they’ve lost two in a row and three of the last four. More concerning for Phoenix is the loss resulted in New Orleans overtaking them atop the Western Conference ladder leading them by 1.5 games.
They weren’t the only team either as the Grizzlies (+1) and Nuggets (even) also surged past them dropping them to fourth while the Kings and Clippers are 1.0 and 2.0 games back with FOUR teams 2.5 games behind.
Theorthetically, the Suns who were first to start this week could find themselves plummeting to seventh (or even lower) this coming week if they don’t find a way to get out of this slump.
Opponents score 110.6 points ranking ninth while shooting 46.7% (12th) from the field and 36.2% from deep (20th).
Offensively, they average 115.8 points per game ranking eighth overall. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 47.7% from the field and 38.5% from the perimeter ranking ninth and third respectively.
Devin Booker (hamstring) is questionable. Duane Washington Jr. (hip) is out Sunday. Jae Crowder (trade request) and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out.
New Orleans Pelicans
Brandon Ingram and Herb Jones remain out but just as they’ve done all season the Pelicans win regardless of who suits up. I’m not confident they’ll finish first but I do believe they’ll net a home-court seed in the first round.
I still think that top honor will go to the Nuggets – especially after witnessing Jamal Murray’s game-winner in Portland, but I digress.
New Orleans sure is sending messages to their competition and looks extremely confident. In the win versus Phoenix, six Pelicans scored in double-figures.
Zion Williamson led the way with 35 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Oh, and a 360 dunk at game end just to punctuate the point!
Zion Williamson threw down a windmill dunk in the closing seconds of the Pelicans' win over the Suns.
Things got heated after that 👀

Offensively, the Pelicans rank fifth for scoring averaging 117.2 points per game while shooting 48.5% from the field and 369% from the perimeter ranking fifth and 10th respectively.
Defensively, the Pelicans allow opponents to score 110.1 points per game, ranking seventh. New Orleans holds their opponents to 46.1% from the field also ranking ninth and boasts the second-best perimeter ranking of 33.5%.
Herbert Jones (ankle) Brandon Ingram (toe) and E.J. Liddell (knee) are all out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Pelicans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Suns are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games against New Orleans.
- The Pelicans are 5-0 SU in their last 5 games at home.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction:
New Orleans is rolling especially at home despite nights where their arena looks half full (come on Pels fans, show up and support!).
Most baseball sets result in splits but this one takes on another level of drama given the melee at the end of Friday and the seeding since another Pels win separates them from Phoenix by 2.5 games.
Although Booker’s hamstring and Johnson’s injury offer excuses they would be weak given Ingram and Jones remain out. The reality is if they lose this game it could have a negative psychological effect.
Having said all that ^^^ and knowing the Suns HAVE to win I’m taking the Pelicans to cover. Phoenix made a big deal about the dunk but should’ve kept quiet and because CP3 chirped at the Pels bench now the fans will show up (watch the arena finally be full for a game!)
