Thursday, December 15th, finds the Phoenix Suns facing the LA Clippers for the second of four meetings between the Pacific Division rivals this season. The Suns will host on February 16th and April 9th. Phoenix won the initial match 112-95 on October 23rd.
The Suns last played Tuesday losing 97-111 to the Rockets while the Clippers are completing a back-to-back set having defeated the Wolves 99-88 on Wednesday.
Last season, the squads met four times and split the season series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 136 of their 232 matches.
Phoenix Suns
It was one thing for the Suns to be losing to a deep Pelicans team who are full of confidence but the loss to the Rockets extended their losing streak to five games in a row and sent up more than a few red flags.
In less than a week the Suns have plummeted from the West’s top seed to fifth. The Blazers and Clippers sit fourth and sixth with all three teams 2.5 games out of first while the Kings (-0.5) and Jazz (-1) are right behind.
Adding to their woes, Deandre Ayton tweaked his ankle on Tuesday and if he’s sidelined he’ll join Devin Booker who is already out with a hamstring injury.
Plus the schedule isn’t going to do the Suns any favors. After this match, they’ll play four home games but two are against teams ahead of them (Pelicans, Grizzlies), and starting Christmas Day they’ll embark on a six-game road trip primarily against winning clubs.
Opponents score 109.3 points ranking sixth while shooting 46.4% (11th) from the field and 36.5% from deep (21st).
Offensively, is in the top third of the league putting up 116.5 points per game ranking seventh overall. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 48.0% from the field and 38.4% from the perimeter ranking eighth and third respectively.
Ayton and Booker are questionable while Cameron Payne (foot) who also left the last game and Duane Washington Jr. (hip) are out. Jae Crowder (trade request) and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out indefinitely.
LA Clippers
The performance the Clippers put on the Celtics was what most analysts envisioned this team being when they earmarked this club as the potential winner of the West.
It’s as simple as whether the Clippers have their two superstars healthy and get enough games under their belt to gain reps and build chemistry with each other.
They can win on any given night but those reps are vital to develop organic chemistry and rhythm.
Presently, they sit 30th for scoring averaging 107.7 points per game shooting 46.4% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 19th and 13th respectively.
Defensively, the Clippers’ opponents average 109.2 points per game (4th) and shoot 45.4% from the field (4th) and 34.8% from the perimeter (12th).
Presumably, Kawhi won’t play given the back-to-back but his status is unknown since LA hasn’t submitted their official injury report yet. Norman Powell (groin) and John Wall (knee) are questionable.

Phoenix had no problem being the bully but didn’t like being on the losing side of the equation and whined about ‘playing the game the right way’.
They should’ve used that ammo to fuel a win on Sunday but failed and then lost again Tuesday to a supposed ‘tanking team’. Now they may have to navigate injuries to three of their top five players during a tough schedule stretch.
Look, I’ve never been a big fan of the Suns and felt they were riding the reputation of their title run two years ago when they were fortunate to face copious teams dealing with injuries.
Booker is a top-end talent, but they aren’t (in my humble opinion) one of the top four West teams although I did expect the refs to help them until the franchise sold.
All I know is they relished punking the teams ‘beneath them’ these past two seasons and those clubs kept receipts and now they’ll be coming to collect.
