Wednesday, January 4th the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers meet for the first of two scheduled matches this season. Phoenix will host the second contest on January 8th.
Both teams last played on Monday with the Suns losing 83-102 to the Knicks while the Cavaliers rode an amazing Donovan Mitchell 71-point performance to a 145-134 overtime victory versus the Bulls.
Last season the clubs played twice with the Suns winning both contests. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 69 of their 117matches.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Tuesday evening, January 3rd. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, January 4th.
Phoenix Suns
With opponent Mitchell adding his name to a list of just seven players who’ve scored 70 or more points it’s notable one of the names on that list is Devin Booker.
The Suns are learning just how hard it can be to win games without their superstar.
Booker tried to rest and come back several times while dealing with the groin injury appearing in two games (plus 4:20 on Christmas Day) with Phoenix winning those two matches but registering a 2-8 record in the other 10.
Since learning Booker would miss at least a month the Suns are 1-3 and looking ahead to the 12 matches that occur prior to January 27th, ten feature winning opponents (seven who are top four seeds).
Opponents score 111.7 points ranking 11th while they limit their foes’ shooting 47.1% from the field and 36.1% from the perimeter ranking 16th and 18th respectively.
With their recent struggles, the offense has dipped averaging 114.2 points per game which dropped them from eighth to 15th in a single week. They are shooting 46.8.0% from the field and 38.2% from the perimeter ranking 17th and fourth respectively.
Booker (groin), Jae Crowder (trade request), and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Mitchell joined a rare group of seven with that 71-point performance but every point he scored prior to overtime was essential.
On the season he’s averaging 29.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.8, assists, and 1.0 steals per game. He’s shooting 49.2% from the field, 41.3% from deep on 20.6 and 9.3 attempts per game
Offensively, Cleveland scores 112.1 points per game ranking 21st while shooting 48.2% from the field and 36.6% on the perimeter ranking seventh and 13th respectively.
Cleveland tops the league for opponent scoring limiting foes to an average of 106.9 points per game. Cavs opponents shoot 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from deep ranking ninth and 22nd.
Darius Garland (thumb sprain), Evan Mobley (ankle), and Dean Wade (shoulder) are questionable for Wednesday. Dylan Windler (ankle) and Ricky Rubio (ACL surgery) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Cavaliers are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games.
- The Suns are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games against Cleveland.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Cleveland’s last 5 games at home.
- The Suns are 2-8 SU in their last 10 games on the road.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
Although Cameron Payne and Landry Shamet look to be available what the absence of Booker has demonstrated is Phoenix lacks depth and versatility in comparison to the rising young teams in the Conference.
Given the Suns’ upcoming harrowing schedule, the big question is whether the team will look to make trades in order to upgrade their depth and that also leads to how the new ownership will impact that decision.
Cleveland is tough at home (17-4) and sits fourth in the East. Their record against lower-tier teams (14-5) is more dominant than against winning clubs (10-9) especially when you consider three of the five losses to the sub .500 group were against the Raptors.
Phoenix has looked closer to a middling squad without Booker so it favors the Cavs, especially at the Fieldhouse.
