Martin Luther King Jr. Day has a full slate of events with the Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards playing the third match in what is their second meeting this season. Philly won the initial meeting on December 26th 117-96. The clubs will play once more with Philly hosting on February 2nd.
Both teams played on Saturday with the 76ers defeating the Heat 109-98 and the Wizards falling 110-115 to the Blazers.
All-time the 76ers have the advantage of winning 187 of 310 matches with Philly sweeping the three-game regular-season series last year and holding a current six-game winning streak against Washington.
Philadelphia 76ers
Joel Embiid’s five-game streak of scoring precisely 31 points ended on Friday versus Boston but it didn’t matter as his 25 points were more than enough to get the win. Flash forward one night and he was back to producing over 30 points with 32 registered against the Heat.
Rookie Omer Yurtseven did his best to limit Embiid but in truth, it wasn’t a fair fight. Doubtful even if Bam Adebayo had been available he would’ve done much better as the center delivered a double-double of 32 points and 12 rebounds plus three assists, a steal, and a block.
Miami has been one of the better teams in terms of their win percentage against opponents with records above .500 and while the Heat won the prior contest against Philly on this night the 76ers were flowing on both ends despite missing some key contributors.
Notably, Embiid was a late-game decision as he nurses an elbow injury. Keep that in mind when making your bets for the next seven games as only the Lakers (21-21) and Wizards (22-21) have winning records.
Matisse Thybulle who took a tumble Friday when Dennis Schroder pushed him in the back as he went up for a dunk missed the game Saturday but is listed as questionable for Monday as are Jaden Springer (quarantine), and Danny Green (hip). Shake Milton (back) is out indefinitely.
Ben Simmons remains out under suspension as he chooses not to participate for the 76ers and awaits a trade.
Washington Wizards
With Bradley Beal in health and safety protocols, much like the Wizards did early in the season while the star struggled with his shot – they won. Beal has missed three games and Washington has won two.
Players who were in quarantine (other than Beal) all returned and the big news was Thomas Bryant is finally back playing in the last two games. He’s being eased back into the rotation playing under 12 minutes in both matches.
His stats don’t jump off the page in the two outings (three points, 1.5 rebounds) but his presence can’t be evaluated on stats. Bryant provides rim protection and ups the ante on defense. Prior to his injury last year he was averaging 14.3 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 42.9% from deep on 2.1 attempts.
Because he can stretch the floor it makes Montrezl Harrell more valuable because they won’t be clogging the paint on offense.
Bradley Beal (quarantine) and Davis Bertans (foot) are questionable for Monday.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
The 76ers thumped the Wizards in their last meeting, and that was with Bradley Beal not in the lineup. He’s questionable for Monday, but I doubt it matters whether he suits up or not the way Embiid is playing.
