On Saturday, January 14th, the Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz will meet for the second and final time this season. Philly won the initial meeting on November 13th, 105-98.
Philly last played Thursday and got pummeled 133-114 by the Thunder while the Jazz are completing a back-to-back set facing the Magic on the front side Friday.
[Update: the Jazz beat the Magic 112-108 with Lauri Markkanen (28 points, 12 rebounds) and Jordan Clarkson (23 points, 12 rebounds) recording double-doubles and were the only starters to play over 30 minutes.]
Last season, the teams played twice with the Jazz winning both contests. The Jazz holds the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 58 of their 106 matches

Philadelphia 76ers
For much of this season, the common names uttered as Eastern Conference favorites are the Celtics and Bucks with the Nets and Cavaliers also frequently floated as options.
Despite the 76ers boasting perennial MVP candidate Joel Embiid, a former MVP whose dishing dimes like a coin dispenser (James Harden), and rising talent Tyrese Maxey they are seldom in that favorite conversation.
The reason perhaps is as simple as Philly doesn’t instill a belief they’re unstoppable or can deliver consistently. The two games against the Thunder provide the perfect evidence of that inconsistency.
Without Harden or Maxey the 76ers beat OKC by 19 points.
Nevertheless, two weeks later with their Big 3 on their home court, they lost by that same margin to that young Thunder team who took it to the 76ers.
Also, they responded to every run and at least on this night looked much more like a playoff team than the Sixers!
76ers Stats
This season, the 76ers score an average of 113.7 points per game ranking 16th. Also, Philly shoots 47.9% from the field and 37.8% from the perimeter, ranking 10th and fourth respectively.
Furthermore, defense is where the 76ers make their mark allowing the third-fewest opponent points per game with 110.0 the 11th-ranked field goal percentage at 46.6%, and the fourth-best perimeter defense at 34.5%.
Utah Jazz
At this point, ten of the Jazz’ next 12 games are at home a welcome respite after finishing a stretch where they played nine of 12 on the road and collected just three wins.
Utah is the West’s version of the Pacers in terms of their Cinderella season. So far, they’ve cooled off but remain scrappy and are frequently in games late but struggle to win in close games.
Equally important, scan their last seven losses and other than the Bulls they were all within five points.
Jazz Stats
In contrast, Utah averages the third most points per game with 117.5 and ranks 14th for shooting efficiency from the field – 47.2% and from the perimeter averaging 36.2% from deep.
Equally important, Jazz opponents score 116.8 points (24th) shooting 48.3% from the field (26th) and 34.9% from deep (9th).
Also, Collin Sexton (hamstring) and Leandro Bolmaro (illness) are probable, Talen Horton-Tucker (ankle) is questionable while Udoka Azubuike (quarantine) and Kelly Olynyk (ankle) are out.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Utah Jazz NBA Prediction:
Additionally, the 76ers sit fifth, but they don’t present like a team who’ll threaten the top four seeds and recently something just feels off.
By the same token, perhaps that is a by-product of Embiid missing time and the core not having enough reps to regain chemistry.
All in all, this five-game Western road trip offers an opportunity to change that perspective. Then again, winning at Vivent in Utah is tough, and the Jazz are still dialed in to be in the playoff picture so I’ll take the points.
