On Tuesday, February 23rd, the Philadelphia 76ers meet the Toronto Raptors for the third time this season and the second time in the last three days.
This is the fifth set of same opponent/consecutive dates for both teams. Philly swept three (Hornets, Heat, Celtics) and split one (Pistons). Toronto split twice (Heat, Pacers) and swept twice (Hornets, Bucks).
The Sixers have lost their last four road games and the Raptors hold a four-game win streak.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Raptors winning three of the four contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having won 57 matches of the 97 played.
Philadelphia 76ers
After posting a 50-point performance against the Bulls and being named an All-Star Game starter Joel Embiid was probably licking his lips over the prospect of the two games in Tampa.
Particularly because Marc Gasol who had great success slowing Embiid had left in free agency as had Serge Ibaka.
Ben Simmons returned after missing the last two games due to an illness and the time off paid dividends.
Embiid registered a double-double of 25 points and 17 rebounds while Simmons posted his second-highest point total of the season (28).
Both players took 14 free throws while the Raptors had taken 12 total free throws until the final minute of the match.
Embiid had to work for his shots (6 of 20) and in fairness, the Raptors gameplan was to apply more defensive attention to him with a secondary focus on Tobias Harris and Seth Curry.
Harris shot 6 of 17 for 13 points and Curry shot 4 of 12 for 12 points.
Toronto Raptors
Nick Nurse had to adapt quickly from his new starting small-ball lineup and insert Aron Baynes when Philly jumped out to an 11-2 start that grew to 22-8.
Adapting is arguably Nurse’s best attribute and his minor adjustments to Sunday’s gameplan equated to a big win.
Pascal Siakam (23 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, steal) and Fred VanVleet (23 points, five rebounds, nine assists, steal, block) led the way with complete games including quality defensive plays at critical moments.
Chris Boucher (17), Norman Powell (11), and OG Anunoby (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Kyle Lowry (thumb) missed his third game and is questionable for Tuesday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 3-6-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Bench scoring was a big factor in the first game with Philly scoring 16 points while Boucher surpassed that on his own with the collective group scoring 35.
While Toronto has witnessed a positive shift in correcting early issues the 76ers are experiencing the opposite effect.
Case in point the Raptors were 0-13 when trailing after three quarters but have won the last three games under those circumstances. Philly hadn’t lost a game (17-0) when they led by double-figures but are 0-2 in the last two to the Jazz and Raptors.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Raptors +2
With their core starting lineup, the 76ers were 14-0 but have lost the last three under those circumstances (Blazers, Suns, Raptors).
Philly limited Powell and forced Siakam to be a playmaker but Sunday proved how versatile and deep Toronto is and highlighted the 76ers lack of depth.
Plus the Bucks series is fresh and the adjustments Milwaukee made for game two only served to open opportunities for the Raptors who are also likely to have Lowry back.
I initially predicted a split but I’ve vacillated believing the Raptors continue the streak.
