Tuesday, December 28th the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors meet for the second time this season. Toronto won 115-109 on November 11th. The Atlantic Division rivals will play again in Philly on March 20th and in Toronto on April 7th
Both teams played on Sunday with the decimated Raptors getting pummeled 99-144 by the Cavaliers while the 76ers easily dispensed of the Wizards 117-96.
Last season, the squads played three times with the 76ers taking two of the three contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 59 of their 100 matches.
Philadelphia 76ers
Joel Embiid seemed to laugh at Montrezl Harrell during their dust-up on Sunday because frankly, Trez doesn’t have the height or strength to provide much resistance for the 76ers big man.
In fact, that one game offered great insights why Daryl Morey should want to get a Ben Simmons deal completed sooner than later because he has a genuine MVP candidate on this team and needs to dive into this championship window with his star in his prime.
In the win Sunday, Embiid posted a double-double of 36 points and 13 rebounds with two blocks. Tobias Harris offered 23 points and reminded why he’s a great third scoring option but it sure would be nice to add a secondary playmaking scorer to complement the duo.
Seth Curry added 11 points (4 of 14) along with nine assists, and five rebounds but is playing a bigger role than Doc Rivers should want him to have (so again Daryl – it’s time to deal Simmons).
The 76ers are mid-way through players returning from protocols with Andre Drummond, Shake Milton, and Danny Green the trio all downgraded to out Tuesday.
Toronto Raptors
While the majority of the association has dealt with health and safety protocols no team has missed every single one of their starters and seven top scorers out at the same time.
Even finding players who Toronto can utilize in hardship deals has been an exercise as some of them have also needed to enter protocols. That resulted in eight players meeting for the first time a few hours before the game on the bus headed to play the Cavaliers.
Half the team was from the varsity roster and half were brand new faces. Chris Boucher, Yuta Watanabe, rookie Dalano Banton, and Svi Mykhailiuk were the four players from the roster.
Watanabe offered the best takeaway with a double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds (both career-highs) and bolstered Nick Nurse’s reasoning to give him more playing time when the roster is healthy again.
While Toronto kept things close in the opening frame the game was over in the second as the team not only didn’t have enough chemistry they were clearly missing comparable talent and fatigue set in.
Nine are still in protocols with Pascal Siakam and Gary Trent Jr., upgraded to questionable. Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Precious Achuiwa, Malachi Flynn, Justin Champagnie, and Isaac Bonga were downgraded to out while Scottie Barnes is listed as out indefinitely.
In addition, Khem Birch (knee), and David Johnson (calf) are questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The 76ers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 3-6-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
The good news is at least the four hardship deal players had 20 to 35 minutes spent on court with their new teammates, rode the bus together, and presumably had time for a post-game chat or cup of coffee.
Seriously though, unless one or two of the players in protocols can suit up this should be another blowout.
