On Thursday, December 31st the Philadelphia 76ers face the Orlando Magic for the team’s first meeting of the 2020-21 season.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Magic winning two of the three matches. The Magic holds the all-time advantage winning 79 of the 118 meetings.

Despite trailing the Raptors by 14 points at two different points in the match the 76ers rode the back of Joel Embiid who took more free throws (16) than the Raptors’ entire team attempted (14).
Philly also got fortunate late in the game when the officials belatedly determined an Aron Baynes 3-pointer hadn’t beat the buzzer. But the big gift came courtesy of a late match call when Embiid received the inbound pass, dribbled into a trap by Toronto using up 6.8 seconds of the 8-second clock.
However, the refs allowed Philly to advance the ball and it led to a score that essentially sealed the win. Sometimes it’s good to be lucky given the 76ers shot 38.1% from the field and 25.8% from deep but the 33 free throws were critical to the win. The Raptors bench also outscored Philly by a margin of 19 to 10.
Four starters reached double-figures with three of them producing double-doubles. Embiid led the way with 29 points (14 of 16 at the free-throw line), 16 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Tobias Harris (26 points, 11 rebounds) and Ben Simmons (11 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists), and Seth Curry chipped in with 17 points.
Orlando Magic
The Magic used a strong fourth quarter in Oklahoma City to capture their fourth win of the season and remain unbeaten.
Orlando started the season by defeating the Heat and the Wizards twice in a row prior to the win in OKC. It’s the first time in franchise history the Magic have begun the season 4-0.
Orlando has struggled in recent years on the offensive end of the floor, but are seemingly benefiting from the constancy of the roster.
All five Magic starters as well as Terrence Ross reached double-figure scoring. Nikola Vucevic led the way with a huge stat line featuring a double-double of 28 points, 10 rebounds along with five assists, and a steal.
Dwayne Bacon (18), Evan Fournier (14), Ross (14), Aaron Gordon (12), and Markelle Fultz (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
James Ennis (calf) didn’t play Wednesday and is questionable for Thursday. Mo Bamba (COVID-19 recovery) and Al-Farouq Aminu (knee) are both out indefinitely and Jonathan Isaac is out for the season.
