Philly started its season with a victory; New York started its with a loss. Neither team plays on Christmas Day but instead begin back-to-backs with this game against each other.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers went into the fourth quarter of their opening game with Washington down ten and came out of it up six, 113–107 the final.
Joel Embiid led the team with 29 points and 14 rebounds. Ben Simmons finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals.
Philadelphia managed the victory despite Danny Green and Seth Curry going a combined 1-of-9 on three-point attempts. Both were acquired in the offseason and both started, along with the two names mentioned already and Tobias Harris, who finished 3-of-13 for ten points.
Dwight Howard is a new name off the bench. He played thirteen minutes and had ten rebounds. Shake Milton provided the scoring punch with 19 points.
It was Head Coach Doc Rivers’ first victory with Philadelphia.
New York Knicks
The Knicks opened their season on Wednesday, too, and lost in Indiana, 121–107.
RJ Barrett started his sophomore season strongly with 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists in over 34 minutes.
The only Knick who played more minutes than Barrett was Julius Randle, who flirted with a triple-double and finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
Alec Burks played 31 minutes off the bench and scored 22 on 6-of-12 shooting. He signed a one-year deal with New York in the offseason after splitting last season between Golden State and Philadelphia.
New York’s first round draft choice, Obi Toppin, shot just 3-of-12 for nine points in his NBA debut.
But the Knicks could not contain the Pacers, which got 75 points from the trio of Domantas Sabonis, Victor Oladipo and Malcolm Brogdon.

I don’t see a lot of defense being played in this game.
The Knicks can score the ball with their lefty duo in the front court. They do not have an answer for Embiid, though, who should have his way inside and then out in this one.
Both teams should be well over 100 with some time to spare in the fourth. The total here is about ten points too low, at least.
