Sunday, January 31st, the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors will play for the first time in the 2020-21 campaign.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Raptors sweeping the regular-season series and have won five in a row versus Orlando. Toronto holds the all-time record between the squads with 50 victories in the team’s 89 meetings.
Orlando Magic
No player is happier that Marc Gasol is in LA than Nicola Vucevic. Gasol has owned him in every meeting between the Raptors and Magic, particularly in the postseason.
Vucevic is one of the best big men in the game and he’ll have Aron Baynes to contend with but I’d put good money on him registering his typical double-double effort in this outing.
That said, the Magic have lost 10 of their last 12 games and are struggling to find the offense (rank 28th) they had to start the season. More shocking is their 21st ranked defense.
Versus the Clippers, the entire Magic roster struggled to score with Terrence Ross leading the way off the bench scoring 24 points and only Vucevic (10) joining him with double-figure scoring.
Michael Carter-Williams (foot), Chuma Okeke (knee), and Al-Farouq Aminu (knee) are all out indefinitely.
Jonathan Issac suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee in the Orlando bubble. Markelle Fultz tore his ACL in the eighth game of the season. Both will be out for the rest of the season.
Toronto Raptors
The brief winning stint by the Raptors has shifted back to losing again with three consecutive losses to the Pacers, Bucks, and Kings.
Although they played well enough to beat the Bucks they couldn’t get to the line shooting only 12 free throws and none in the final frame.
With Pascal Siakam and Kyle Lowry back in the lineup Toronto dealt with the loss of OG Anunoby and Norman Powell which threw off their ability to maintain any semblance of constancy.
Granted, their effort early against the Kings was abysmal and they only were in the game late because the Kings took their foot off the pedal.
At least Toronto figured out they need to mix up their offense in order to get to the charity stripe which they did 36 times but still didn’t translate that to the fourth quarter with the Kings getting the edge 11 to 4.
Siakam led the scoring with 32 points with VanVleet (26), Lowry (17), Terence Davis (12), and Yuta Watanabe (12) registering double-figures.
Norman Powell missed the last game with a quad contusion and is doubtful to play versus the Magic. OG Anunoby has a strained calf that caused him to miss the last two games and won’t play Sunday.
Patrick McCaw has yet to play since offseason knee surgery.
