Orlando Magic
It’s been a struggle for Orlando since its 4–0 start. The Magic is 5–15 since and it has lost five out of its last six.
Now it has a West Coast trip with games in Portland, Golden State, Sacramento and Phoenix in a six-day stretch.
Injuries have decimated the Magic, which lost Jonathan Isaac before the season began and then Markelle Fultz in the early going.
The Fultz injury left a vacuum at the point guard spot, which Michael Carter-Williams was trying to fill before he went down too. He’s been in the out of the lineup and not quite adequate enough, even when he is healthy.
Cole Anthony has received the most burn at the one since Fultz went down. The rookie has gone through growing pains but he looks good.
He’s scored in double-figures in four straight games and provides a scoring punch that will keep him in the league.
He’s not, however, a great defender. He also needs to work on cutting down his turnovers. The opportunity to play a lot of minutes right off the bat in his NBA career will bode well for the future.
Even since Fultz tore his ACL, things have gotten worse for Orlando. Evan Fournier has been battling a back problem all year and Aaron Gordon just severely sprained his ankle last week and will be out for at least another month.
As a result, Orlando is getting tossed around by teams that usually get tossed around by their opponents. Chicago beat it by 26 points the other night.
Portland Trail Blazers
It’s been three weeks since the Trail Blazers announced that CJ McCollum would miss at least four with a broken foot.
They have gone 4–4 in that span and are treading water in the bottom half of the Western Conference playoff picture.
Portland may be better in the long-run for McCollum’s injury because Gary Trent Jr. has grown his confidence since entering the starting lineup.
In seven starts since McCollum’s injury, Trent has gone for at least 20 points four times and 19 once. He’s turned it over just twice in his last five games, compared with eight assists.
When McCollum does return, and at this point the Blazers shouldn’t be in too bad of shape when he does, they will have Trent again coming off the bench with a bevy of confidence, ready to lead the second unit.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Magic is 4-2 ATS in their last 6 road games.
- Over is 5-2 in Trail Blazers’ last 7 games as a home favorite.
- Under is 5-2 in Trail Blazers’ last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- Under is 37-18-1 in Trail Blazers’ last 56 overall.
Free Orlando Magic vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction: Orlando close enough, if it gets double-digits.
The Magic has had a couple days off to acclimate to the West Coast time zone. This is the first game of its trip so maybe, just maybe, it puts its best foot forward here.
Nikola Vucevic will be a tough matchup for the Blazers. He’s having his highest-scoring season yet and there are calls for him to make a second Eastern Conference All-Star Team.
