Magic vs. 76ers Gameday
Wednesday serves up the second day of the NBA Play-In Tournament as the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic take on the seventh-seeded Philadelphia 76ers. The winner of this match will move on to play the second-seeded Boston Celtics in round one of the playoffs. The loser gets a second chance as they’ll host the loser of the ninth versus tenth seed play-in match.
Both squads last played on Sunday. Orlando had one of the worst collapses ever witnessed as they played their entire core but fell 108-113 to the Boston Celtics reserves. Four Magic players scored in double digits, with Jalen Suggs and Paolo Banchero each scoring 23 points.
Philly defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 126-106. Six 76ers scored in double figures, led by Tyrese Maxey with 21 points, while Andre Drummond delivered a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Orlando Magic vs. Philadelphia 76ers Odds & Last 5
This year, the 76ers won the season series two games to one, while the Magic dominated the season prior, winning three games to one.
The clubs have played twice in the postseason, each winning once, with the most recent series occurring in 2009 when the Magic defeated the Sixers.
Both clubs have been mired by injuries throughout the season and arrive at this match with core talent still missing on each side.
Orlando enters this match following the brutal loss versus the Celtics, but had been on a five-game winning streak before that meltdown. The Magic finished the season with a 45-37 record.
Likewise, Philly’s record is 45-37, but they struggled down the stretch, going 2-3. Obviously, the loss of Joel Embiid to appendicitis created a huge gap in the middle, but the talent on Philly is arguably better than the Magic, who struggle to get their top two players to mesh.
Philly is favored by 1.5 points with an over-under of 220.5 points.
Magic Stats
With 82 games in the well, Orlando ranks 18th (114.2) on offense and tied for 13th on defense (113.6). Additionally, the Magic are 17th in net rating (+0.6) and possess the 14th-quickest pace (100.56).
The East’s eighth seed averages 115.7 points per game while its opponents average 115.1 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Orlando averages 26.5 (15th) and 43.4 (19th), respectively.
Orlando’s team leaders* are Paolo Banchero for scoring (22.2 points) and rebounds (8.4), Jalen Suggs for assists (5.5) and steals (1.8), and Goga Bitadze for blocks (1.0).
While the Magic only shoot 34.3% from the perimeter as a team, they have four players who shoot above the league average from deep.

The East’s seventh-place Sixers average 115.9 points per game while their opponents average 116.1 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Philly averages 24.6 (tied for 29th) and 43.6 (17th), respectively.

Orlando Magic vs. Philadelphia 76ers bottom line:
After a loss of the nature that the Magic suffered on Sunday, this match is a real gut-check for the team that squandered a game to the Celtics’ reserves.
Lose, and it’s almost a guarantee Jamahl Mosley is gone (he may be anyway), but furthermore, if the Magic lose this game (and can’t rebound in the next match to win) it’s likely there will be sweeping changes in Orlando, who are very close to an apron team.

Magic 76ers Free Pick: 76ers -1.5
Here is my Magic 76ers free pick.
Clearly, not having Joel Embiid hurts the 76ers, but they have a quality group that features two snipers in Tyrese Maxey and Paul George.
Sure, the Magic’s length could be a problem, but there is only one Jalen Suggs who’ll likely draw the Maxey matchup. So, who on the Magic will guard PG?
Per John Schuhmann: Orlando is still a worse-than-average offensive team, but the Magic are not going to finish in the bottom 10 on that end of the floor for a 14th straight season, having seen the league’s third biggest jump in points scored per 100 possessions from last season. But they’ve seen almost an equal jump in points allowed per 100, having lost their edge on defense.
In terms of X-factors, for the Magic, it is Jalen Suggs who will have the most difficult defensive assignment and will be looked upon to hit from deep.
For the Sixers, there are a couple of options, but I’d say how George performs will be the key to freeing up Maxey et al.
Ultimately, I just can’t get behind the Magic after the kind of loss they had on Sunday. They would never throw away the game, but I’m pretty sure the Celtics would smoke them at full power, so losing for a shot at the Pistons may be the best choice anyway.
Take the Sixers to win and cover.
