Florida is definitely not the capital of the NBA this season with both teams struggling.
Orlando has been the better team in terms of record but they are coming off a loss in which they got hammered by Toronto.
The Heat has lost two in a row, both at home. They are just looking for some respectability.
It is easy to see why some NBA teams thrive and others don’t. I don’t know what Orlando is doing.
One smart thing they seems to have moved off of is starting Elfrid Payton. He still plays more than half of the game coming off the bench though. It says a lot that DJ Augustin is a better starting option.
Aaron Gordon has his moments but he is another top pick that has become a big miss. He still has the great hops but there are so many ally oops and put backs you can get on a regular basis. He is not a good rebounder and does not block shots which probably means his instincts are very good.
Evan Fournier would be a great sneaky sixth man kind of scorer but as your top scorer he is an easy reminder of where the Magic program is right now. He is good at getting his shot off when they need one even if he doesn’t make at a high rate.
Nikola Vucevic has only been one of the most productive big men in the league the last few seasons averaging a double-double. So of course it makes sense that they marginalize him to play defense right?
Orlando seems to compete and under Frank Vogel they are a good defensive team but overall there is not much to like. They should probably gut this group.
Before the season started I would have thought Miami would have been the better team thanks to the inside out duo of Hassan Whiteside and Goran Dragic.
Whiteside is having a monster season but Dragic seems to leave you wanting more. In both cases they should play more to give this team a real chance.
After those two the options get really thin. They may have 8 players averaging 10 or more points per game but in this case it is a bit of an illusion of depth.
As a Raptors fan I have always liked the game of James Johnson but he is not a legit power forward in this league. He can do a few things but is not a reliable regular.
The same goes for Derrick Williams who has been a disappointment since he was drafted.
There are no easy fixes for this team which is hoping that someone will emerge from their pile of wings.
They have played better against the number with a 14-14 ATS record.
