Magic vs. Pistons Gameday
Sunday serves up Day 2 of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, with the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons playing in the third match of the day at 6:30 p.m.
Orlando advances after defeating the Charlotte Hornets in the Play-In Tournament, bouncing back from a poor effort versus the 76ers. The Magic went on a five-game winning streak before sputtering to a 46-38 record and falling well short of the preseason projected win/loss total of 51.5 games.
Detroit dealt with the absence of star Cade Cunningham and continued to feast, closing out the season on a 15-4 run. They finish with a record of 60-22, well above the preseason projected win/loss total of 46.5 games.

Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons Odds & Last 5
The teams split this campaign, each winning twic,e although one of those Magic wins came with most of the Pistons’ core being rested.
This is the fifth meeting between the clubs in postseason history, with Detroit holding the edge three series to one. It’s been since the Dwight Howard era that these clubs played in the postseason.
To finish the season, the Magic were flailing, hitting some major lows and seldom looking like a squad to be afraid of. They were in the mix to finish as high as fifth but fell into the Play-In and needed both opportunities to reach the playoffs.
In contrast, Detroit sewed up the top seed with ample time to spare, allowing the club to ease Cunningham back into rhythm while also taking the final few games to sit and rest their core.
The Pistons are favored by an 8.5-point spread with an over/under of 218 points.
Magic Stats
Orlando ranks 18th (114.2) on offense and tied for 13th on defense (113.6). Additionally, the Magic are 17th in net rating (+0.6) and possess the 14th-quickest pace (100.56).
The East’s eighth seed averages 115.7 points per game while its opponents average 115.1 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Orlando averages 26.5 (15th) and 43.4 (19th), respectively.
Orlando’s team leaders* are Paolo Banchero for scoring (22.2 points) and rebounds (8.4), Jalen Suggs for assists (5.5) and steals (1.8), and Goga Bitadze for blocks (1.0).
While the Magic only shoot 34.3% from the perimeter as a team, they have four players who shoot above the league average from deep.

Orlando Magic vs. Detroit Pistons bottom line:
After pushing the Knicks to six games last season, the Pistons arrived at this campaign focused on the task at hand. They’ve spent most of the year being underestimated, and while they have been without doubt, the most consistent team in the East, they’re still considered underdogs to reach the Finals over the Celtics or Knicks.
While many fans and pundits thirsted for a Hornets – Pistons Round 1 series, this matchup may be better for Detroit, which can use it to prep for the latter rounds. Jalen Duren, in particular, will get a much better test against the size of the Magic than he would’ve against the Hornets.
Like their counterparts in the West, they lucked out in their side of the bracket and will avoid having to play both the Knicks and Celtics. Now, they just need to take care of business and send a message to their opponents that they’re here to win.

Magic Pistons Free Pick: Pistons -8.5
Here is my Magic Pistons free pick.
Every year, there is one series that tends to be a throwback to the OG days, and this series feels like it might fall into that category.
As per above, it would behoove the Pistons to take care of business early, as the longer the Magic have to gain confidence and allow Franz Wagner, Anthony Black, et el to get back into a rhythm, the more likely it is the series will take longer to close out.
Prepare for an old fashioned, grueling mucked up series as the Magic try to rediscover the defense that had pundits raving about them this past offseason. Instead, the Pistons will bring their number two ranked defense to the court where the Magic players should take notes for their impending vacation and offseason work in the lab.
While the Pistons are collecting all the roses that come with winning, the Magic enter this series licking wounds. They have a misfitting offense that has never seemed to figure out how to capitalize on Banchero and Wagner together.
Adding Desmond Bane has paid off in terms of his production and availability (he played in all 82 games), but the jury is still out on how the trio fits together.
Moreover, they are a costly group that cost a ton of money (and draft picks for Bane) to put them together. Perhaps this is a matter of needing more time together, but it sure feels like they are on the precipice of a quick exit and some harsh decisions occurring in the offseason.
That said, there are some mismatches the Magic can capitalize on with their size, especially if they can limit Cunningham. Still, I’m expecting a quick series that might require a broom or a gentleman’s hat.
Take the Pistons to win and cover.
