Sunday, December 18th, the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics play the third of four scheduled matches. Boston won the initial contest on October 22nd 126-120.
This is the second game of a baseball set with the Magic shocking the Celtics by taking the front side of the set 117-109 on Friday. Orlando will host the final meeting on January 23rd.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Celtics sweeping the regular-season series. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 73 of their 125 matches.
Orlando Magic
In their first 25 matches of the season, the Magic collected just five wins. Some would argue they were simply banking losses early toward their tanking effort.
But Orlando suffered copious injuries which made it difficult for head coach Jamahl Mosley to get his players any semblance of consistency or to build the all-important chemistry from getting reps together.

And while several players are still sidelined the team has suddenly broken through keeping the win streak alive with impressive victories against teams like the league-leading Celtics.
The timing of this baseball set came in handy as Orlando brought their swagger and confidence into Boston and nabbed the victory.
The Wagner brothers and Paolo Banchero are feeling themselves as they posted the team’s fifth consecutive victory against the best team in the league. Mo led the way with 25 points and eight rebounds while little brother Franz added 19 points and Banchero scored 20 points.
Offensively the Magic average 109.4 points per game ranking 28th overall. They shoot 46.9% from the field and 34.2% from the perimeter ranking 18th and 20th respectively.
Defensively, Orlando holds their opponents to 113.5 points per game ranking 15th. The Magic allow opponents to shoot 47.2% from the field ranking 18th and foes shoot 33.4% from the perimeter ranking second overall.
Jalen Suggs (ankle), Gary Harris (hamstring), Wendell Carter Jr. (foot), Chuma Okeke (knee), and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are all out.
Boston Celtics
After consecutive losses, some might say the Celtics got a bit lucky. They coughed up a double-digit lead to the Lakers while Jayson Tatum had to be otherworldly in order to force overtime.
That they were playing an older Lakers squad definitely helped their efforts as Boston had played the night prior. Suffice to say it wasn’t the best of the Celtics season but they managed to salvage a 4-2 road trip.
Boston will need to address some of the issues that arose during the trip (the matches in Toronto and versus the Lakers could easily have been losses).
Perhaps the return of Robert Williams III will help to resolve whatever is ailing the club. In his season debut, RWill offered nine points, five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in 18 minutes off the bench.
While the Celtics got through the quarter mark of the season with a historically profound offense they’ve cooled off a bit lately.
They still rank first in scoring, averaging 119.1 points per game but their efficiency has waned dropping to fourth in both field goal percentage – 48.5% and perimeter efficiency of 38.6%.
They’re improving defensively with opponents averaging 112.8 points (14th), 46.8% field goal shooting (15th), and 34.6% from the perimeter (ninth).
Jayson Tatum is out Sunday for personal reasons. Danilo Gallinari (ACL repair) is out indefinitely.

Turns out those Celtics issues on the recent road trip weren’t just hiccups and the Magic wins versus the Clippers and Raptors weren’t just outliers.
Ironically, the Orlando front office led by Jeff Weltman spent time with Masai Ujiri in Toronto so it’s not that surprising he’s also trying to build a team centered on length. And that length can be pinpointed as why Orlando is currently collecting wins.
That plus the fact Mosley has orchestrated lineups that are in rhythm and have chemistry with each other. Now, whether they can maintain this effort is questionable but considering how many of the arguably better players are still out injured, at the very least says the future for the Magic looks very bright.
As for this matchup, Boston can’t afford to look past this game or assume they’ll get the automatic split (see Toronto last weekend) but they’re still an elite team even if they’re dealing with a minor setback currently.
Without Tatum playing, the Bean Town crew will have to bring their “A” game and Jaylen Brown needs to lead the squad to victory. I like the Celts to win but love the 12 points so I’m jumping all over the Magic to keep it closer than that spread.
