Tuesday, January 11th, finds the Oklahoma City Thunder and Washington Wizards playing for the second and final time this season. Washington won the initial meeting on November 26th 101-99.
Both teams played on Sunday with the Thunder losing 95-99 to the Nuggets while the Wizards hung onto beat the Magic 102-100. All-time the Thunder have the advantage of winning 15 of 26 matches. Last season the Wizards won both meetings.
Oklahoma City Thunder
With four games in the books for 2022, the Thunder have yet to notch a victory in the New Year. This after all was the game plan to tank their way to through this season in order to increase their shot at winning the draft lottery.
The draft class of 2021 has been exceptional as the Thunder are keenly aware having nabbed Josh Giddey at sixth along with some other special talents like Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Aaron Wiggins.
Although the 2022 class doesn’t look quite as rich in talent it still has several prospects at the top of the class who could be generational in nature which is what VP Sam Presti is hoping for.
Yet, the problem with tanking is losing doesn’t guarantee those darn bingo balls will bounce right, and worse, if you’re not careful the constant losing can negatively impact culture (see the Rockets).
So far Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s leadership has kept this young Thunder club motivated and invested in competing but now that his numbers are taking a dip because of the constant double and triple defensive teams he’s drawing – will it impact his overall temperament?
It’s something to keep an eye on because if SGA starts to tire of the constant losing Presti will have far more issues than worrying where bingo balls bounce.
Isaiah Roby (questionable) and Kenrich Williams (out) are in health and safety protocols.
Washington Wizards
It’s taken Bradley Beal a while to get rolling this season as he searched to replicate his typical scoring output and efficiency. While the Wizards started 13-7 Beal was scoring 23.2 points shooting 27.5 percent from deep. That’s well off his average of last season of 31.3 points and just under 35% from deep.
Ironically as the Wizards’ star improved (27.6 points, 38.2% from deep in last 10 games) the team regressed, reversing course in the second 20 games registering a 7-13 record.
Like every team, the Wizards dealt with players missing games due to protocols. That seemed to impact Washington more than other teams since their greatest strength is their depth. Fortunately, that situation is improving as players return and more specifically two core members. Rui Hachimura made his season debut versus the Magic.
Additionally, coach Wes Unseld updated this week that Thomas Bryant is expected back within one to two weeks. Both players are part of the Wizards core so their presence should help the Wizards be more competitive.
The trio in protocols is Montrezl Harrell (probable), Brad Wanamaker, and Anthony Gill who are questionable for Tuesday. Thomas Bryant (knee) is expected back within the next week or two.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Wizards are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 4-5-1 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
This isn’t a gimme game for the Wizards as the first meeting between the teams showcased the Thunder will push in every match. Couple that with the fact they haven’t won in the New Year and this has all the makings of a trap game for the Wiz. I’m betting on the Thunder keeping it close but the Wiz eeking out the win.
