Monday, January 25th finds the Oklahoma City Thunder playing the Portland Trail Blazers in the clubs’ first meeting this season.
Both teams played on Sunday with the Thunder losing to the Clippers and the Blazers holding off the Knicks to capture their ninth win and hold onto the fourth seed in the West.
Last year, the squads played four times with each team winning twice to split the regular-season series. The Thunder holds the all-time record between the squads with 122 victories in the team’s 240 meetings.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Like some other young teams, the Thunder got out to a strong start but have leveled off losing five of their last six games.
Unlike the other clubs who arguably overachieved OKC isn’t necessarily upset about losing given their desire to land the top draft pick this year.
While the Thunder feasted on their Eastern five-game road trip (4-1) they’ve struggled on the Westen version losing all three played to date.
This weekend they lost consecutive matches to the Clippers committing the same mistake in both games.
Specifically, the Thunder allowed LA to jump on them in the opening quarter building a double-digit lead that put them in a downward position the entire match.
On Friday they trailed 18-36 and on Sunday it was almost deja vu as OKC lost the first quarter 19-36. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way with 23 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
Isaiah Roby delivered a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) while Darius Bazley came just short of matching him (nine points, 11 rebounds).
George Hill (22) and Hamidou Diallo (14) were the other double-digit contributors.
Al Horford has missed the last five games spending time at home to welcome child number four to the family and is projected to be out again on Monday.
Josh Hall (health and safety), Ty Jerome (ankle), and Trevor Ariza (personal) are all out indefinitely.
Portland Trail Blazers
It seems no team has worse luck with injuries than the Blazers. After suffering through copious man-games lost due to injury last season Neil Olshey spent this past offseason shoring up the Blazers’ depth.
It’s a good thing as Portland has been hit early and hard with the loss to a trio of their core. CJ McCollum will miss a month with a broken foot. Jusuf Nurkic is out for up to six weeks with a broken wrist.
And Zach Collins who had just returned from another injury is out indefinitely after suffering an ankle stress fracture.
Their absence is putting extra pressure on Damian Lillard but he and the team are delivering although the defense is still a work in progress.
In their latest win, the Blazers built a 20 point halftime lead but had to battle in clutch time to hold off the surging Knicks. Lillard led the way with 39 points, five rebounds, and eight assists.
Anfernee Simons (16), Derrick Jones Jr. (14), Carmelo Anthony (12). and Gary Trent Jr. (11) were the other double-figure scorers.
NBA Betting Trends:
- OKC are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 vs. NBA Northwest
- POR are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.
- Over is 6-2 in POR last 8 Mon. games.
