Wednesday, December 29th, finds the Oklahoma City Thunder playing the Phoenix Suns for the second time this season. Phoenix won the initial December 23rd match 113-101. The squads will play twice more this season with the Thunder hosting on February 24th and April 3rd.
The Thunder are playing a back-to-back set having played the Kings on Tuesday on the front side while Suns suffered uncharacteristic back-to-back losses to the Warriors (107-116) on Christmas Day and the Grizzlies (113-114) on Monday.
Last season, the squads met on three occasions with Phoenix taking two of three contests. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Thunder in 131 of their 246 matches.
Oklahoma City Thunder
While the majority of the NBA was dealing with NBA health and safety protocols and whole segments of rosters were locked away in quarantine the Thunder had seemingly avoided the virus.
But omicron shows no preference and it finally caught up to the Thunder who lost several players to start week 11.
The timing sucks for OKC who had won four of their last five games losing only to the Suns. That they’ll face Phoenix after consecutive losses looking to get back in the win column is unfortunate.
Albeit, the Suns will also be missing core contributors but their depth and talent exceed the Thunder.
On the weekend the Thunder had no players in health and safety and by the time this game occurs the total may swell beyond the seven that entered in the last 24 hours.
Those players are Darius Garland, Aleksej Pokusevski, Derrick Favors plus rookies Josh Giddey, Tre Mann, Aaron Wiggins, and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. Of the seven, Wiggins is the only one who is tapped as a possibility to play.
Not since the third and fourth games at season start have the Suns lost two games in a row until their most recent matches.
Phoenix and Golden State have distanced themselves from the rest of the league but the loss on Christmas Day had to be a tough pill to swallow given it was the Dubs who were shorthanded and on the road.
That was followed up by Phoenix losing a one-point heartbreaker. Suddenly all the good fortune that had gone the Suns was was perhaps evening out as the Grizzlies stole that victory.
You can bet Chris Paul and co. won’t be crying that the scrappy young Thunder will be the team shorthanded and use the motivation to have a break-out performance.
As it is, the Suns will be missing two key cogs with Jae Crowder (questionable) and Deandre Ayton (out indefinitely) in protocols Additionally, Ian Wainwright (back) and Abdel Nader (knee) are questionable while Frank Kaminsky (knee) and Dario Saric (knee) are out indefinitely.
On the season the Suns rank eighth in offense (111.3), third defensively (104.3), and third as well for net differential (plus +7.0). Diving into the last two games Phoenix allowed the Warriors and Grizz to score 115 points or 11.3 points above their typical average.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Thunder are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Thunder are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
As the Grizzlies match in early December made clear the Thunder can’t afford to miss key rotational players and while they still have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort they don’t have the depth to compete with the Suns. Still, I’m antsy to hand them a 15 point loss margin.
