Monday, December 12th, the OKC Thunder and Dallas Mavericks meet for the second of three scheduled matches. OKC won the initial October 29th overtime contest 117-111 and will host the final match on January 8th.
Both teams last played Saturday with the Thunder losing 101-110 to the Cavaliers while the injury-decimated Mavericks got pummelled 115-144 by the Bulls.
Last season, the squads played four times with Dallas winning three of the four contests. The Thunder holds the advantage all-time having won 86 times of the club’s 168 meetings.
OKC Thunder
Just past the quarter mark Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to impress enough to have Charles Barkley making weekly sermons on why he should START in the All-Star Game.
The fact Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic are most likely to be voted in based on their popularity notwithstanding Sir Charles has a point. SGA is averaging 31.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game.
SGA had been leading the league in 30-point performances with 17 in 24 appearances but he’s now second (see below).
Most impressive is his shooting proficiency with him connecting on 50 percent of his 20.8 attempts from the field. He’s shooting 92.6 percent from the charity stripe on 10 attempts per game both career-bests.
The Thunder score 115.8 points per game ranking seventh. OKC ranks 22nd shooting 46.0% from the field and ranks 21st from the perimeter shooting 34.0%.
Defensively, the Thunder rank 29th for opponent points allowed per game with 117.6 scored. Their foes shoot 46.9% from the field which ranks 14th and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking 16th.
Kenrich Williams (knee) is out. Chet Holmgren (foot) is out for the season.
Dallas Mavericks
Ironically, the player who bumped SGA off the top rung for 30-point games is Luka Doncic who has 18 such efforts in 24 appearances. He’s averaging 32.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 8.8 assists, and 1.8 steals per game.
Luka gets to the line 10.4 times per game shooting 71.1 percent and similar to SGA shoots efficiently from the field (50.1%) on 22.6 attempts.
And without their star in the lineup Saturday (plus Josh Green and Maxi Kleber) everyone saw just how much impact he has on the Mavericks squad.
The Mavericks score 111.5 points per game ranking 18th overall and ranks 14th for field goal percentage (47.1%) and 16th for perimeter percentage (35.5%).
On defense, the Mavs rank fifth for opponent scoring allowing 110.0 points per game with foes shooting 48.4% from the field and 37.3% from the perimeter ranking 25th and 24th respectively.
Doncic (quad strain) is probable, Maxi Kleber (foot) is questionable and Josh Green (elbow) is out Monday.

Ironically, both teams are playing at close to the same level lately as they’ve each lost two in a row and are both 7-8 through their last 15 matches. The Thunder already demonstrated they can beat the Mavs via the overtime win in late October.
In that match, Luka dropped a triple-double of 31 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists but it was SGA who led his squad to victory with 38 points, nine assists, and six rebounds.
The big difference is one team isn’t sweating the losses and might even welcome an extended losing streak since they’re only four games up on the coveted bottom three slots to be in prime position for the Wembanyama sweepstakes.
The other team has designs on following up their Conference Finals appearance by winning the title!
With Luka expected back, and being at home gives Dallas the advantage and presumably, Doncic will do whatever is necessary to collect the W — now as for the spread, I’m not as confident they’ll rout OKC so I’ll take the points.
