On New Year’s Eve the Atlantic Division rival New York Knicks travel to Tampa Bay to play the transplanted Toronto Raptors in their first meeting of the season.
Last season, the squads played twice due to the pandemic with the Raptors taking both matches. Toronto holds the all-time record between the clubs with 54 victories in the team’s 95 meetings.
New York Knicks
Through four games Tom Thibodeau has his squad playing .500 ball. The Knicks lost badly to the Pacers and 76ers to start the season but then routed the Bucks and ended the unbeaten streak of the Cavaliers in their most recent game.
Only eight players got minutes in the victory over the Cavaliers as four of the five starters scored in double-figures while Mitchell Robinson was the lone player who missed the mark but was one point shy of registering a double-double.
Julius Randle delivered a triple-double of 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. The Knicks backcourt is clicking as Elfrid Payton and RJ Barrett combined for 26 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists. Reggie Bullock contributed 17 points.
Alec Burks (ankle) is day-to-day while Dennis Smith Jr. (quadricep). Immanuel Quickley (hip), Omari Spellman (knee) and Austin Rivers (groin) are all questionable. Obi Toppin (calf) will be out until early January.
Toronto Raptors
The team who won the title two seasons ago has stumbled out of the gate as one of four winless teams (Pistons, Wizards, Rockets).
Head coach, Nick Nurse is dealing with angst over the lack of whistle for his club that factored once again as Joel Embiid (16) had more trips to the line than the Raptors team (14). The 76ers took 33 free throws.
It’s the second time in three games where the Toronto players aren’t getting to the stripe. Normal Powell took eight of the 12 free throws in the opening contest and Kyle Lowry took nine of the 14 in the 76ers match.
Part of the issue is the lack of interior scoring, but more concerning is they’ve led all three games but go through cold spells which invariably align with when the whistles come for the opposition.
Only three Raptors scored in double-figures with Kyle Lowry leading the way with 24 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists, Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby each scored 20.
Patrick McCaw remains out healing from offseason knee surgery.
