Friday, January 6th, the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors meet for the second of four scheduled matches this season. Toronto won the initial meeting 113-106 with Pascal Siakam dropping 52 points at MSG.
The next two meetings between the clubs are also in January with New York hosting on the 16th and Toronto hosting on the 22nd.
Both teams last played Wednesday with the Knicks winning 117-114 versus the Spurs while the Raptors lost 101-104 in overtime to the Bucks.
Last season, the teams played four times with the Raptors winning three of the four contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the Knicks in 58 of their 102 matches.

New York Knicks
At season start the Knicks were among the teams expected to be hovering between a play-in team and possibly as a lottery team. Whether they’ve overachieved or just been fortunate with injuries they are the team sitting where many expected their opponent to be (in 6th).
Leading the way for the Knicks is the trio of Julius Randle, Jalen Brunson and RJ Barrett although I’ve been adamant the shift to success is intrinsically linked to the moment Quentin Grimes became a starter.
Notably, Grimes was out in the first meeting between these clubs when the Raptors collected the win.
Offensively, the Knicks score 114.2 points per game (15th). New York shoots 45.7% from the field ranking 24th and 33.8% from the perimeter ranking 25th.
Defensively, the Knicks allow opponents to score 111.4 points per game (11th). New York allows their opponents to shoot 45.3% from the field and 34.1% from the perimeter ranking third and fourth respectively.
RJ Barrett (lacerated finger) is out Friday. DaQuan Jeffries and Trevor Keels are on G League assignment.
Toronto Raptors
Presumably, the Raptors’ front office set a cut-off point for when they would shift from competing to tanking and one has to believe that threshold was crossed on Wednesday.
In what was one of the wildest games in recent memory the Raptors were simply unable to score shooting 2 of 23 in the first quarter versus Milwaukee.
It felt very much like the players were sending a message to the coach and Fred VanVleet who has thrown his younger teammates under the bus via passive-aggressive comments.
The goal was to shift VanVleet from being the primary playmaker or shot-taker which he sporadically does but on this night with ESPN in town he made sure to be the one initiating the offense and the result was stark.
Midway through the fourth Toronto had scored 69 points with VanVleet attempting the most shots. In contrast, Barnes had barely touched the ball (0-3) and the Bucks were up by double-digits.
At 6:45 in the fourth, VanVleet began to let Barnes initiate the offense and the results were palpable – he scored 15 points, and orchestrated the play (including setting a screen and garnering the assist) to Gary Trent Jr., who hit the 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.
Barnes was the only Raptor to score in the extra frame, but again it was VanVleet who took the final shot that like most of his shots this season missed the mark.
On offense, the Raptors score 111.1 points per game (26th) shooting 44.7% from the field (28th) and 32.4% from deep (29th). Defensively, the Raptors allow 111.3 opponent points per game ranking (10th) while shooting 48.7% (27th) from the field and 36.3% (24th).
Otto Porter Jr. (foot) remains out while Dalano Banton and Ron Harper Jr. are on G League assignment.

It’s a bit surprising the Raptors are favored in this contest given the atmosphere around the team right now. The expectation is Masai Ujiri will restructure the team.
All eyes are on VanVleet but Siakam could be in the mix and while OG Anunoby is the player most coveted it’s hard to imagine he isn’t the second untouchable (Scottie Barnes).
The power struggle won’t disappear regardless of whether deals are coming which makes it virtually impossible to bet on Toronto against the better teams.
