Sunday, January 9th the New Orleans Pelicans and Toronto Raptors meet for the first time this season. They’ll play in New Orleans on February 14th to wrap up the season series.
New Orleans last played on Thursday stealing a game versus the undermanned Golden State Warriors (101-96) while the Raptors erased a double-digit deficit to come back on a severely shorthanded Jazz squad in their 122-108 victory on Friday.
All-time the Raptors have the advantage of winning 25 of 41 matches although last season the Pelicans won both contests.
New Orleans Pelicans
It must be so frustrating to be a New Orleans Pelicans fan with the yo-yo season and news on Zion Williamson. Will he play this year? Or will the Pels shut him down for the year?
Each new picture of the young star offers up ample reasons to wonder if he’ll ever be a player that can get (and stay) in game shape.
On the other hand, it’s hard not to question if he’s doing this on purpose so the Pelicans won’t offer him a max deal, And in truth, they shouldn’t unless they use the Joel Embiid “medical caveats” example.
The Pels recent play showcased how the above phenomenon works. They lost five of eight (including matches versus Rockets and Spurs) then won four of five (including wins versus the Bucks, Cavs), then lost three in a row.
They ended the losing streak by defeating the Warriors and while they were missing Steph Curry and Draymond Green it was still an impressive win.
Brandon Ingram delivered a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds plus six assists. Josh Hart offered 14 points, six rebounds, and two assists, while rookie Herb Jones scored 13 points adding six rebounds, two assists, and five steals.
Tomas Satoransky (quarantine) and Josh Hart (personal) are out Sunday. Williamson (foot) is out indefinitely, Didi Louzada Silva (PED usage) is serving a 25 game suspension and Kiri Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season.
Toronto Raptors
The Raptors looked very much like an exhausted team who underestimated the competition to start the game Friday.
Like the Warriors, Utah elected not to bring the majority of their core to Toronto which seems to suggest teams aren’t anxious to have players/staff test positive for COVID and have to remain in Canada abiding by the strict protocols.
Toronto replicated what they did versus Milwaukee allowing Utah to build a double-digit halftime lead then came out on fire in the third and locked up the Jazz defensively took over the lead and breezed to the win.
Fred VanVleet took over in the third, shooting 8 of 8 to score 24 in the frame (17 straight at one point) on route to his first-ever triple-double of 37 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
OG Anunoby scored 21, Chris Boucher added 13 while the trio of Pascal Siakam (17), Scottie Barnes (11), and Gary Trent (10) all struggled from the field as they combined for 38 points on 15 of 42 from the field.
DJ Wilson was re-signed to a second 10-day hardship deal. Yuta Watanabe (quarantine) is out as is Goran Dragic (personal).
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Jonas Valanciunas returns to play his drafting team but the Raps are all too familiar with his weakness (guarding the pick and roll). I anticipate big stats for Ingram and JV and make it competitive but the Raps get their sixth in a row.
Scottie Barnes is nursing tendinitis in his knee and hasn’t been as aggressive offensively since returning from protocols – he’s due for a breakout game.
