Tuesday, December 29th finds the New Orleans Pelicans facing the Phoenix Suns. The opening week of the 2020-21 season has offered hints of a league with more parity and clubs who are intent on returning to the postseason.
The Suns and Pelicans are two examples of teams in the latter group with both entering the second week of the season sporting a 2-1 record.
The Suns hold the all-time record between the clubs with 31 wins in 61 meetings. Last season, the clubs only played twice due to the pandemic and split those games taking one apiece.
New Orleans Pelicans
The early season has offered insight into the Pelican’s growth. While Jrue Holiday is gone the young Pelicans have taken steps.
Zion Williamson is healthy which is important, but arguably Brandon Ingram is the more important piece of the Pelican puzzle.
In addition, the growth of Lonzo Ball is on display as his shot looks much improved while his passing and defense are stellar as per usual.
In the defeat of the Spurs, this trio all played a critical role as did Josh Hart with three of the four players registering double-double performances.
Brandon Ingram led the way with 28 points, 11 rebounds plus six assists. Williamson offered 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Lonzo registered 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists while Hart entered off the bench to produced 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Will Magnay has missed all three games and is away from the team so he’ll need to go through the COVID-19 protocols upon his return. Wenyen Gabriel has also missed all three games due to knee and quad tendinosis. Neither is expected to play Tuesday.
Phoenix Suns
With the NBA trying to cut down on travel this season due to the pandemic teams will frequently play consecutive games against the same opponent on their court.
That was precisely what the Suns experienced in their second and third games of the young season as they faced the Kings in Sacramento.
Phoenix split the set, losing a nail-biting 103-106 game on the 26th but followed it up with a 116-100 thrashing the very next day.
Five Suns reached double-figures with Mikal Bridges leading the way scoring 22 points and adding seven rebounds. Devin Booker registered 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Deandre Ayton produced a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds while Cameron Johnson (21) and Frank Kaminsky (11) also delivered double-figure scores.
While Chris Paul was not about the double-digit group his 12 assists and leadership were key to how the Suns attached the Kings from the tip.
Dario Saric has missed all three games this season with quadriceps soreness but is expected to return to action Tuesday. Abdel Nader (concussion). and Jalen Smith (ankle) aren’t expected to be in the lineup.
