Sunday, January 22nd, finds the New Orleans Pelicans facing the Miami Heat for the second and final time this season. The teams just played Wednesday, January 18th in New Orleans with the Heat winning 123-110.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Pelicans getting thrashed 110-123 by the tanking Magic while the Heat got manhandled 90-115 by the Mavericks.
All time the Heat have the advantage of winning 24 of 44 matches versus the Pelicans. Last season the teams played twice with the Heat winning both contests.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Saturday evening, January 21st. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Sunday, January 22nd.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans remain seeded fourth despite losing for the eighth time in 11 games. They’ve been fortunate that while they are struggling the Mavericks, Clippers and members of the parity pack have also been losing.
The teams who made up ground were primarily so far behind (Thunder and Warriors for example) that the Pelicans accumulated prior padding has kept them safe.
In the loss Friday, CJ McCollum led the way with 23 points while Jonas Valanciunas registered a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds). Six Pelicans reached double-digit scoring including Trey Murphy III (18) and Jose Alvarado (17).
Stats
Offensively, the Pelicans rank ninth for scoring averaging 116.4 points per game while shooting 48.0% from the field and 36.4% from the perimeter ranking ninth and 12th respectively.
Defensively, the Pelicans allow opponents to score 113.7 points (16th) and limit opponents to 47.3% from the field (16th) and 34.3% from the perimeter which ranks fifth-best.
Naji Marshall (toe) is doubtful for Sunday. Zion Williamson (hamstring), Brandon Ingram (toe), and E.J. Liddell (knee) are out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
A bit of an odd game by the Heat in Dallas. It’s highly unusual for Erik Spoelstra to wave the white flag or concede a game but it sure felt like that’s what transpired.
Dallas got up early (31-19) in the first and while Spo still played his starters only Bam Adebayo (35) and Caleb Martin (33) logged more than 30 minutes as the veteran coach seemingly chose to manage his players’ minutes.
Perhaps that decision was made far easier when Dallas jumped on them coming out of the half-time break. Five players scored in double-figures with Victor Oladipo (20) leading the effort.
Stats
So far, offensively, the Heat score 108.8 points per game (30th rank) shooting 45.5% from the field (26th) and 33.7% from the perimeter (26th).
As can be seen, defensively, the Heat allow opponents to score 108.7 points per game ranking second overall. Also, Miami opponents shoot 47.4% from the field and 37.1% from the perimeter ranking 18th and 27th respectively.
Udonis Haslem (Achilles tendinosis) is probable. Duncan Robinson (finger), Nikola Jovic (back), and Omer Yurtseven (ankle surgery) are out indefinitely.

Although the Pelicans limp into Miami, the Heat are coming off a road trip that ended badly with them failing to hit the century mark. Miami gets the win but the Pels keep it closer than the spread so take the points.
