New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans warmed up for their big Christmas Day game with a win in Portland.
Carmelo Anthony was the Trail Blazers’ leading scorer with twenty-three points. Damian Lillard (18) struggled and the Pelicans took advantage with five guys in double-figure scoring and five with at least three assists.

New Orleans is as healthy as it has been this season with Lonzo Ball and Jrue Holiday in the lineup together along with JJ Reddick, Brandon Ingram and Derrick Favors.
Ball catches a lot of heat for his obvious flaws but he does other things well and he wants to win. And a team like the Pelicans is clearly much better with him available. He had seven points, four assists and seven rebounds in the victory over Portland.
His much-maligned three-point shooting has also improved, if gradually, in each season he’s spent in the NBA. He just turned twenty-two years old it seems that Ball will be wind up being nothing worse than a solid NBA player for many years with sure potential to continue improving.
Of course, that isn’t anything close to what the ceiling is for an average second pick but the report on Ball when he came out of UCLA nearly three years ago now was that he was more of a high-floor, low-ceiling guy, at least as far as top picks go.
With Ball providing some playmaking help for Holiday, Reddick spacing the floor, Ingram slashing and scoring a little bit from everywhere and Favors finishing down low, the Pelicans offense, however limited, has a little bit of everything.
So while New Orleans might only have eight wins, it will have its best lineup available for the Egg Nog Nightcap and that’s all any degenerate can ask for.
Denver Nuggets
Denver got a road win on Monday too in the lead-up to its first Christmas Day Game since 2012 when Jordan Hamilton and Kosta Koufos scored sixteen points apiece to lead a losing effort.
The Nuggets were worthy of playing on this day a year ago when they did not and they’re just as much so this season.
Jamal Murray scored twenty-eight in Monday’s win (which your handicapper had pegged as a narrow Phoenix victory. The Nuggets won by two but the Suns covered by the hook as small home underdogs) and Nikola Jokic had a twenty-two-point triple-double.
In addition to Big Honey’s ten assists, Murray had seven, Will Barton had five and Mason Plumlee, doing his best Jokic impression, had three in just seventeen minutes off the bench.
So the Nuggets can dish it too. This one could be fun.
