The home team Boston Celtics are perhaps starting to find their groove, after laying down an historical beatdown on the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night, 133-77. Boston definitely has the talent to be among the Eastern Conference’s best in 2018, but the Celts haven’t really put everything together yet. The fans wait anxiously, and a home match-up against the merely average New Orleans Pelicans might be the tonic to help the development along in Beantown.
Not that Boston sports fans need any sympathy over their lack of winning teams, mind you.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pels have one of the best players in the NBA in ‘The Eyebrow’ Anthony Davis, and that’s enough for a handful of wins right there. Still, New Orleans brass must put a better team around a generational talent like Davis. New Orleans is currently third in the Southwest division and is on the outside looking in on the Western Conference playoff bracket.

New Orleans has lost three of its last five and must find some consistency if the Pelicans are to move up the league standings. Davis is otherworldly, putting up nearly 28 points per game (27.8) to go with 12.5 rebounds and nearly five assists per. Davis affects every aspect of play for the Pelicans. Point guard Jrue Holliday is also an impact player, putting up nearly 20/10 (points/assists) to support Davis. Yet, another step forward for L.A. Lakers cast-off Julius Randle would help New Orleans’s depth a lot.
The Pels recently pushed the chips in and splashed some cash when they acquired DeMarcus ‘Boogie’ Cousins from Sacramento a couple of seasons ago, but they have since shipped him off to Golden State – as if they needed another impact talent on that championship roster. New Orleans maybe doesn’t need another big man, but they do need another star player of Cousins’s ilk to pair with AD.

The standings thus far has proven that Davis alone – while remarkable – isn’t enough to tread water in the competitive West. The NBA is a superstar-driven league, and the Pelicans are more advantageous than most for having one amazing player like that. They shouldn’t waste it and should do what is necessary to build the pre-conditions for winning, especially with the Spurs taking a step back and the Lakers probably not ready to seriously challenge yet.
Davis could go off in the Garden, but it likely still won’t be good enough.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics, meanwhile, have built the kind of deep roster than might contend for an NBA title. It won’t be easy, with the Toronto Raptors, the Philly 76ers and the Warriors looking more imposing than ever, but Boston should be all-in for the 2018-19 season.
Boston has been working to get special talent Gordon Hayward back in the fold after missing all of last season with a gruesome leg injury. The C’s hold the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, but they’ve won their last five consecutive games and are trending upward to run with the Torontos, Phillys and Milwaukees of the world. Apart from Hayward, Boston rolls out score-first PG Kyrie Irving, slick big man Al Horford and good depth highlighted by Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and Terry Rozier.

The only issue with the Celtics might be one of chemistry; young talents like Brown, Smart and Rozier were A-1 options last year, thanks to a bunch of injuries, but these youngsters that became stars in 2017 must learn to accept to play diminished roles this time around. If the team can achieve roster harmony, Boston will be squarely in the middle of the playoff mix come the end of the regular season.

Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Expect the Boston Celtics to keep the Pellies, apart from one-man wrecking crew Davis, under wraps in the ‘Gahden’ on Monday night. Boston has better depth throughout the roster than New Orleans, and though PF Horford has his hands full defending AD, even with some double teams, Boston has the solid defending elsewhere to handle the responsibility.
Look for Boston to handle the visitors quite handily on Monday night in chilly Massachusetts.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Celtics -8
Anticipate smooth scorer Irving to drop some points on New Orleans’s Holliday early and often. Take Boston in this game, as they’ll probably make it six straight Ws.
