Saturday, February 6th the Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder will finish off a back-to-back set in their second game of this season.
The Wolves won the first of the consecutive games in Oklahoma City 106-103. The second game on the back end of the back-to-back could feature several core players from each squad returning such as Karl-Anthony Towns from the Wolves and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luguentz Dort, and Theo Maledon from the Thunder.
The Thunder holds the all-time record between the squads with 85 victories in 121 meetings. Last season these clubs played three times with Oklahoma City winning all three contests.
Minnesota Timberwolves
With the Thunder missing most of their starting lineup the Wolves still had to battle to the buzzer and rely on a D’Angelo Russell 3-pointer to capture the victory.
Russell finished with 21 points including 5 of 8 from deep, four rebounds, six assists, and one steal but also had five turnovers.
Malik Beasley led the scoring for the Wolves with 24 points. Naz Reid (17), Jaylen Nowell (14), and Jake Layman (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
As noted, Towns is listed as potentially returning for this match after missing 11 games while quarantining due to a positive COVID-19 test.
Jarrett Culver (ankle) is out until January 10th.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Already missing their starting backcourt of Gilgeous-Alexander and George Hill as well as Dort the Thunder got hit with more bad news as rookie Theo Maledon had to sit out due to contact tracing.
All three could play on Saturday but that did nothing for new Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault who had only eight players dressed for the match on Friday.
That the young squad battled to the buzzer is indicative of this young squad’s tenacity and grit. Veteran Al Horford did his best to lead his younger teammates and they almost pulled off the win.
Horford delivered a magnificent effort of 26 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and three blocks.
Two members of the Thunder’s future core Darius Bazley (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Hamidou Diallo (career-high 10 assists plus 16 points) each delivered double-double performances.
Mike Muscala provided a gritty effort with 13 points and eight rebounds while Isaiah Roby added 11 points.
Gilgeous-Alexander (knee), Dort (knee), Maledon (illness) are all game-time decisions.
George Hill (thumb) is out until March 9th. An interesting update is CBS lists Trevor Ariza (personal) as a game-time decision but he hasn’t been with the team all season — do they know something we don’t?
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- Timberwolves are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 8-2 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
I was keen to see Theo Maledon put on a show so his absence was disappointing but hopefully he’ll be able to go today.
Anthony Edwards had a relatively quiet night Friday with nine points on 3 of 14 along with two rebounds and five assists.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Thunder +0.5
As noted, on Friday I expected the teams to split these games, and even if KAT returns I like the Thunder to take the second game.
