Friday, December 23rd, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics play the first of two scheduled meetings this season. Minnesota will host the second meeting on March 15th.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with Minnesota having lost 99-104 to the Mavericks while the Celtics lost 112-117 to the Pacers.
Last season, the squads played twice splitting the series each winning on their home court. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Timberwolves in 42 of their 63 matches.

Minnesota Timberwolves
Rudy Gobert made his return to the court after missing three consecutive games but his presence raised more questions than answers. While he was sidelined with an ankle injury Anthony Edwards led the Wolves to three consecutive wins.
So the fact, the Wolves lost with Gobert back highlighted how this team still hasn’t formed a cohesive chemistry with him on the court.

Anthony Edwards is averaging 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. AntMan is shooting 45.5% on 18.1 attempted field goals, 36.2% on 6.9 deep balls, and 75.4% from the charity stripe on 5.3 free throws.
Minnesota hasn’t hit their stride defensively which is reflected in the stats with opponents scoring 115.5 (22nd) while shooting 46.0% (8th) and 37.4% from deep (26th).
Offensively, the Wolves score 114.9 points per game (11th), while shooting 49.0% from the field (3rd) and 34.2% from the perimeter (24th).
Kyle Anderson (back) and Gobert (ankle) are questionable. Jordan McLaughlin (calf) is downgraded to out Friday, while Taurean Prince (shoulder) is out along with Karl-Anthony Towns (calf) who’ll be out until mid-January.
Boston Celtics
Adding fuel to the adage what goes up must come down are the Celtics’ recent struggles. They’ve lost three in-a-row and five of the last six matches.
The signs were on display in their road trip where two victories could easily have been losses if not for an MVP-level effort by Jayson Tatum in Toronto and younger legs plus a bit of luck in LA as they coughed up a double-digit lead to the Lakers and had to win in overtime.
The Celtics’ recent struggles are being reflected in the stats which witnessed them drop to second for scoring (they’ve been first all season) averaging 118.0 points per game.
Efficiency-wise they also dropped to 47.7% from the field and 37.9% from the perimeter ranking 10th and 6th respectively.
While there is still work to be done defensively, they are showing signs of improvement on that end with opponents averaging 112.3 points (13th), 46.6% field goal shooting (11th), and 35.2% from the perimeter (11th).
Marcus Smart (illness) is questionable for Friday. Danilo Gallinari (ACL repair) is out indefinitely.

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
There are whispers part of the issue in Boston for their recent struggles is tied to the stars (Tatum and Brown) buying the media hype and reverting to old bad iso habits.
If the second half of the Pacers game is any indication I’d say Joe Mazzulla already has addressed the problem because they played much more like they had when successful this season.
In contrast, the failure of the Wolves when Gobert is in the lineup has to concern the front office who mortgaged the future to add the big man but clearly, the cornerstone (Edwards) isn’t vibing with him.
The spread is healthy but given the situation, I’m betting on the Celts using this match as preparation for what will be arguably their biggest test to this point in the season (Bucks on Christmas Day).
