Monday, January 17, finds the Milwaukee Bucks facing the Atlanta Hawks for the second time this season. The Hawks won the initial match on November 14th with a score of 120-100. The clubs will play again in Milwaukee on February 9th.
Both teams last played Saturday with the Hawks losing 108-117 to the Knicks and the Bucks losing 96-103 versus the Raptors.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Bucks winning two of the three contests. The Bucks hold the all-time record with 114 wins in 227 matches versus the Hawks.
Milwaukee Bucks
Some teams just match up well against other clubs and the Bucks’ nemesis may well be the Raptors who completed the season sweep on Saturday, a night after they fell to their own nemesis of sorts (Dwane Casey and the Pistons).
Most expected a Bucks victory (raises hand) given Giannis Antetokounmpo hadn’t played in the prior two games against Toronto. That looked like a good bet when Milwaukee jumped on Toronto taking a commanding 16-2 lead to start the game.
But as Nick Nurse and his Raptors are wont to do they stormed back finding a way to keep Antetokounmpo off balance as he shot 6 of 17 although he did get to the line for 17 free throws and hit them all finishing with 30 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks but had four turnovers as well.
Khris Middleton had a rough night (3 of 12) but Wesley Matthews (2 of 10) and Donte DiVincenzo (1 of 5) found that guarding Fred VanVleet and being productive offensively doesn’t go hand in hand.
The game took a turn early when Bobby Portis blocked Pascal Siakam and got in his face putting his forehead on the Raptors star. He drew a technical foul for the altercation but was fortunate not to be ejected.
Instead, that served as the motivation for Toronto who was trailing 9-22 at the time of the incident and afterward outscored Milwaukee 94-74. While the Bucks still feel like the best bet to represent the East and defend their title it’s also likely they’re hoping not to have to play the Raptors along the way.
Jrue Holiday (ankle) is questionable for Monday while Brook Lopez (back) is out indefinitely.
Atlanta Hawks
Travis Schlenk traded Cam Reddish to the Knicks last week getting Kevin Knox and the Hornets protected first-round draft pick in return. The thinking is Hawks’ exec will use that pick to sweeten other deals he’s anxious to make prior to the trade deadline.
Reddish wasn’t active Saturday as the teams met although it didn’t matter as Atlanta lost again to extend their current streak to five games in a row.
Trae Young led Atlanta with 29 points plus five assists. When Nate McMillan took over last season he spoke to Young about sharing the ball more but he might be regressing back to bad habits as he took 23 shots while the rest of the starting rotation combined for 29 cumulative attempts.
As such, Collins was the only other starter to reach double-figures (13 points) while Danilo Gallinari (17) and Onyeka Okongwu (12) were the other double-figure contributors.
Clint Capela (ankle) and Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) are questionable for Monday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Bucks are 6-4 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Bucks are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head-to-head meetings.
Free Milwaukee Bucks vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
Atlanta is in free fall having lost five in a row and nine of their last 11. Milwaukee will be intent to get back in the win column and given the Hawks’ 28th ranked defense it’s hard to imagine the Bucks not accomplishing that goal and covering the meager four-point spread.
