Monday, January 2nd, finds the Miami Heat facing the LA Clippers for the second and final time this season. Miami won the initial contest 115-110 on December 8th.
Both teams last played on Saturday with Miami beating the Jazz 126-123 on a last-second shot while the Clippers lost a 130-131 heartbreaker to the Pacers on New Year’s Eve.
Last season the clubs played twice splitting the two contests. The Heat holds the all-time record with 38 wins in 68 matches versus the Clippers.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Sunday evening, January 1st. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Monday, January 2nd.
Miami Heat
Tyler Herro pulled out a performance that likened back to the Orlando bubble on Saturday as he ran upcourt into a group of Jazz defenders and launched a 3-pointer that swished through the net as time expired.
Bam Adebayo was the high scorer with 32 while Herro had 29 and both grabbed nine rebounds. Victor Oladipo and Max Strus were the other double-figure scorers with 23 and 13 respectively.
Offensively, the Heat score 109.0 points per game (30th rank) shooting 45.4% from the field (26th) and 34.1% from the perimeter (23rd).
Defensively, the Heat allow opponents to score 109.6 points per game ranking fourth. Miami opponents shoot 47.7% from the field and 34.1% from the perimeter ranking 22nd and 28th respectively.
Jimmy Butler (knee) is probable, Udonis Haslem (Achilles), Caleb Martin (ankle), Gabe Vincent (knee), and Duncan Robinson (hamstring) are questionable. Dewayne Dedmon (health and safety protocols) and Omer Yurtseven (ankle surgery) are out.
LA Clippers
Kawhi Leonard looked the closest to his former self on Saturday versus the Pacers. His shot was flowing and he was moving well as he served up 24 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.
His running mate Paul George reminded his former team of his skills collecting 45 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Yet, in spite of this duo scoring 69 points, it wasn’t enough to stop the young Cinderella Pacers.
If anything, the loss served as a reminder that the Clippers’ championship window is NOW and they’ll have to contend with several young rising teams like the Pelicans, Grizzlies, and Kings in the West (plus the Nuggets and Warriors) just to get to the finals.
It’s two ends of the spectrum through 36 games for the Clippers. Offensively they struggle averaging 109.7 points per game which ranks 28th while they shoot 46.7% from the field and 37.5% from deep ranking 20th and eighth respectively.
In contrast, defensively, the Clippers are impressive ranking in the top five in all three major categories. LA allows the third-fewest points per game at 109.7 while ranking fifth for opponent field goal shooting at 45.7% and 34.0% from the perimeter ranking third.
Nicolas Batum (ankle sprain) is questionable for Monday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Heat are 7-3 SU in their last 10 games.
- The Clippers are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games.
- The Heat are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games against the Clippers.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of the Clippers’ last 6 games.
- The Heat are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games on the road.
Free Miami Heat vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
Two teams who both struggle to put points on the board although each of these stats is a bit of smoke and mirrors because it’s based on numerous games played with the core players out injured.
What isn’t questionable is the fact both teams can lock opponents down defensively so if they play to their identities this could be one of the lower-scoring matches in comparison to the average this season.
