Monday, December 12th, the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers play the second of four scheduled contests this season. Miami will host on December 23rd and February 8th. The Heat won the initial November 4th match 101-99.
Both teams last played on Saturday with each suffering embarrassing losses as the Heat fell 111-115 to the Spurs while the Pacers played down to a severely injury-decimated (rest-addled) Nets squad 133-136.
The Pacers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 70 wins in 124 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with Miami taking two of the three contests.
Miami Heat
When it comes to this iteration of the Heat, I’m reminded of the Godfather scene where Al Pacino says “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in”.
I’d given them the benefit of the doubt that they’d get back on track and figure things out and then they lost to the Grizzlies who were missing their top three players and followed it up with a stinker versus the Pistons.
Before they could be written off again, on cue, they beat the Clippers with George in the lineup, and just to make sure we didn’t proclaim all the troubles were behind them now that Butler was back they lost to the Spurs (at home!)
Seriously – which version of the Heat are we going to get this season?
Diving into the Spurs’ loss offers some insights. At first glance, it seems like the core is doing their jobs. The core four starters all shot 50 percent or better (Martin shot 44.4%) while Lowry, Martin, and Herro combined to make 11 of 20 from deep.
All five starters (plus Oladipo) scored in double-digits with Butler leading the way (30 points). The issue was they weren’t able to stop the Spurs from scoring particularly at the rim, fouled too much, and lost the battle of the boards (32-46).
While they only had 10 turnovers they gave up more points (17) on those miscues than the Spurs who had 18 turnovers but only conceded 12 points off them.
Offensively, the Heat score 108.6 points per game (28th rank) shooting 45.3% from the field (28th) and 34.0% from the perimeter (26th).
Defensively, the Heat allow opponents to score 110.3 points per game ranking eighth. Miami opponents shoot 47.5% from the field (20th) and 35.9% from the perimeter (17th).
Jimmy Butler (foot), Tyler Herro (ankle), Victor Oladipo (knee), Max Strus (shoulder) and Duncan Robinson are probable while Dewayne Dedmon is questionable. Gabe Vincent (knee) and Omer Yurtseven (ankle surgery) are out indefinitely.
Indiana Pacers
The Cinderella Pacers keep defying the odds by winning and beating the typical historical standards but finally fell to one unwritten rule on Saturday when they played down to an undermanned Nets club and lost the match.
Indy failed to take care of fundamentals losing the glass (30-59) including a jaw-dropping 29 offensive boards (to seven) which aided the Nets second-chance scoring (37 points).
With the top-seven scoring Nets out Brooklyn also dominated the paint outscoring Indy by 30 points (72-42). Head Coach Rick Carlisle, said it was one of the few times this season Indy didn’t play together (disjointed).
That point was reflected by their star Tyrese Haliburton who offered 35 points and nine assists but had an uncharacteristic five turnovers.
The Pacers average 115.9 points per game (6th) shooting 45.7% from the field (24th) and 36.8% from deep (11th). Defensively, Indy allows 116.7 points (26th) with opponents shooting 47.2% from the field (17th), and 36.5% from deep (22nd).
Daniel Theis (knee) and Chris Duarte (ankle) are out.

An interesting matchup considering the Heat keep shocking by losing games they shouldn’t and winning against the more elite teams. Indy served up one of their more surprising losses Friday so will be looking to rebound and their size could be a real issue for Miami.
That said, when Butler is in the lineup I’m (cautiously) still buying his stock to do what’s necessary for the Heat to win.
