Miami Heat vs. Charlotte Hornets Odds & Last 5
Head-to-head this season, Miami won the series 3-1; however, the three losses occurred early in the year before the Hornets got into a groove and found their chemistry.
The teams have also met in the postseason on three occasions, with Miami winning twice and the Hornets winning once. The most recent meeting occurred in 2016 when the Heat won 4-3. They finished the season with a record of 43-39.
Miami was 3-2 through the last five matches to complete their schedule. Yet, the Heat were middling through the final 20 games, going 10-10 with wins primarily against lower seeds.
Conversely, Charlotte was one of the hotter teams at season’s end, going 13-7 in their last 20 matches and 18-7 through the last 25. They finished the season with a record of 44-38.
Charlotte is favored by 5.5 points with an over-under of 229 points.

Miami Heat vs. Charlotte Hornets bottom line:
While the Hornets improved on both ends of the floor and went on a winning streak, they weren’t able to climb the ladder, as the teams ahead of them were also playing well.
Miami, on the other hand, fell apart, losing winnable matches, and clung to the 10th seed as the season ended.
On the surface, it’s obvious the Heat have much more experience in a one-off game of this nature. That said, the Hornets have the swagger of a top-seeded team, not one that needs to win or be eliminated.

Heat Hornets Free Pick: Heat +5.5
Here is my Heat Hornets free pick.
As noted, the Heat arrive as the team with much more experience in both the playoffs and the play-in tournament. Yet, the way they prefer to play would fall right into the Hornets hands as they’d be happy to get into a run-and-gun match where they can hit the numerous players who excel from the perimeter.
Clearly, pace then becomes the most important aspect of this match. I’d isolate on the glass, but these teams finished fourth (Miami) and fifth (Charlotte), so there is no true advantage for either club in that regard.
Per John Schuhmann: The Hornets are now 14.4 points per 100 possessions better than they were last season (minus-9.1), which would be the biggest season-to-season improvement in the 30 years for which we have play-by-play data.
If I base my pick on X-factors, I might lean toward the Heat, who have, in my opinion, the best coach in the NBA (Spoelstra) and the experience. On the other hand, the Hornets’ swagger and performances at home down the stretch have me leaning in their direction.
Kon Knueppel would seem like Charlotte’s X-factor, but he’s been in a shooting slump, and the reality is the Hornets roll how Brandon Miller rolls. Presumably, Andrew Wiggins will draw the assignment to guard Miller, and he’s adept at shutting down quality players.
Ultimately, the big question is whether Charlotte can cover the spread of 5.5 points. I’m expecting a physical match with the Heat looking to get inside the Hornets’ heads early, but if they don’t quiet the Hornets’ crowd early, I’m not sure they’ll be able to deliver that action later in the contest.
With that, I’ll take the Hornets for the win, but I’ll also take the points as I expect a closely contested match.
