2026 NBA Handicapping – Miami Heat vs. Atlanta Hawks
Here’s why I’m backing Atlanta in my Heat Hawks free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Heat vs. Hawks Gameday
Miami travels to Atlanta on October 28th for an NBA matchup at State Farm Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 ET, with both teams seeking to get back in the win column.
The Heat are still searching for their first win of the season, and the players are getting annoyed by the narratives coming at them. Bam Adebayo in particular cited “the media” as scapegoating him, although I’m not sure social media should count as your main source.
Jalen Johnson is the only player averaging a triple-double after the first week of play.
Atlanta began the season strong and looked like a team to be reckoned with, but a home and home series versus the Rockets brought them back down to earth.

Miami ranked 12th (115.8) offensively, was tied for 13th defensively (113.6), 13th in net rating (+2.1), and ran with a pace of 104.23, which ranked first overall.
The East’s tenth seed averaged 120.9 points per game, while its opponents averaged 118.5 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Miami averaged 29.0 (fifth) and 46.3 (fourth), respectively.
Defensively the Heat have struggled particularly when Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo are both on the court (136 points per 100 possessions) versus 113.2 per 100 when it’s just one of them on the hardwood (per John Schuhmann).
Miami’s team leaders were Norman Powell for scoring (21.7 points), Davion Mitchell for assists (6.5), Bam Adebayo for rebounds (10.0), Andrew Wiggins for blocks (1.0), while Dru Smith led with 1.4 steals.
Perimeter shooting was a strength for the Heat, who had eight* players shooting above the league average while the team averaged 36.1%.

Hawks Stats
In the 2025-26 regular season, the Hawks ranked tied for 14th (115.0) on offense and tied for ninth on defense (112.9). Additionally, Atlanta ranked 12th in net rating (+2.2) and ran the fifth-quickest pace (102.50).
The East’s sixth seed averaged 118.5 points per game, while its opponents averaged 116.0 points. In terms of dimes and boards, Atlanta averaged 30.1 (first) and 43.5 (18th), respectively.

Seven Hawks shot above the league average while the team as a whole shot 37.1%.

Heat vs. Hawks Key Matchup
The question is how Bam Adebayo and Antetokounmpo fit and whether the revamped Miami roster can start to hit more perimeter shots. Shooting 32.2% from deep won’t get the job done, especially with Giannis needing 3-point snipers to open his driving lanes.

On the Hawks side of the court, Jalen Johnson is the straw that stirs the offense, filling up all the key categories. Nickeil Alexander-Walker is the X-factor, however, as he’ll put pressure on the Heat’s backcourt.
Watch for Dyson Daniels and Lu Dort to make life difficult for Miami on the defensive side of the hardwood.
Miami Heat vs. Atlanta Hawks bottom line: Atlanta’s defense has been stellar, particularly in forcing teams to cough up the ball. They are averaging 21.3 opponent turnovers (second only to Toronto).

Heat Hawks Free Pick: Hawks -3.5
Here is my Heat Hawks free pick: I’m playing Atlanta ATS
Although I don’t expect the Heat to continue spiraling, they definitely need time to figure out the Bam and Giannis pairing. So far, they are occupying the same space on the court both offensively and defensively.
Until they figure out those sets, things won’t improve. And, yes, they need to spread the floor and hit their 3-pointers, but that won’t matter fully until Antetokounmpo and Adebayo can function together.
Atlanta sits in the top 10 (9th) in defensive ranking (108.0) and are impressing with their guard/wing play in particular with Dyson Daniels and Lu Dort leading the way.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker has been impressive on both sides of the court, dialing up clutch winning buckets to help Atlanta capture victories.
They’ve added in players but unlike the Heat their offense and defense are flowing… other than when they faced the powerhouse Rockets.

Atlanta Hawks announcers on the Miami Heat:
“The Miami Heat who are 0-3…what’s going on in Miami? there’s two things – their chemistry hasn’t caught up with them yet and where’s the shooters? they don’t have the perimeter shooting that they had last year. They gave up so much to get Giannis — it’s taken Erik Spoelstra awhile here to get everything retooled, when you don’t have the shooters with Giannis — all you to do is to pack the lane…”
