The Memphis Grizzlies will try to rebound in Game 2 of their first round matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs were clearly the better team by the end of Saturday’s Game 1, but Memphis showed that they can compete if they can find more offense.
San Antonio finished the regular season with a record of 61-21 which was good enough for the 2nd seed in the Western Conference. They dominated the Grizzlies in Game 1, winning by a final score of 111-82.
The Grizzlies limped into the playoffs but managed to hang onto the 7th seed. They fought hard for the first quarter of Saturday’s game, but their offense disappeared by the second half.
There were never any concerns about the Grizzlies’ defense going into the playoffs. All the questions about them came from the offensive side, and it was unclear where they could get enough firepower to compete with San Antonio.
The Grizzlies came out fighting in the first quarter. Marc Gasol seemed unstoppable early on, and Mike Conley was contributing well. Unfortunately, San Antonio caught on quickly and began double-teaming both after the first quarter.
Memphis shot only 39% from the field and went seven for 20 from three-point range. Perhaps most surprising was the defensive effort, as they allowed the Spurs to shoot 53%.
Marc Gasol was clearly the best (and only) offensive weapon for the Grizz in Game 1. Gasol finished with 32 points and five rebounds, although only seven of those points came in the second half. Mike Conley was also kept in check, scoring only 13 points along with seven assists.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs have been so good for so long that it’s boring at this point. The first quarter of Saturday’s Game 1 was a tough battle, but it felt inevitable that they would eventually quit playing around and take charge.
Memphis hit their first five shots and their first four three-pointers, jumping out to a quick 28-15 lead. However, the Spurs did what they do– hanging around and remaining steady until the Grizzlies’ shooting cooled off.
It was midway through the second quarter when San Antonio took their first lead, but they did not look back. The Spurs would outscore the Grizzlies by 42 points in the second half, and they led by as much as 36 points.
It was an impressive offensive display, as they Spurs shot 53% from the floor for the game.
Kawhi Leonard was excellent in Game 1, scoring 32 points on 11 of 14 shots. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the game was the vintage display by Tony Parker, scoring 18 points in 22 minutes of play. LaMarcus Aldridge contributed 20 points on eight for 18 shooting.
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs Game 2 NBA Prediction:
Both of these teams played outstanding defense in the regular season, and it felt like this would be a low-scoring series. However, the Spurs were still able to score at-will on Saturday, and the Grizzlies had no options other than Gasol and Conley.
Even with the dominance in Game 1, I still feel like the Grizzlies will get one game in this series. But it will not be this one.
