Monday, December 27th, finds the Memphis Grizzlies playing the Phoenix Suns for the second time this season. Phoneix won the first match 119-94 on November 12th. The clubs will play a final time in Memphis on April 1st.
Memphis last played Sunday in a 127-102 victory versus the Kings while the Suns played on Christmas Day in a 107-116 losing effort to the Warriors.
Memphis Grizzlies
The young Grizzlies have Ja Morant back and navigated his absence by focusing on and improving defensively which paid dividends.
Although they lost three games in a row prior to the victory on Monday it wasn’t simply indicative of Morant’s return. Certainly, there were tweaks necessary with him back but more was tied to overall fatigue, and great competition (Warriors).
Seven Grizzlies scored in double-figures versus Sacramento led by Desmond Bane (28 points). John Konchar got the start and delivered a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds plus three assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Jaren Jackson offered 21 points and six rebounds, Morant chipped in 18 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds while Steven Adams added 10 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Brandon Clarke returned from an 11 game absence as he and fellow reserve Kyle Anderson each scored 14.
The quartet in protocols (Dillon Brooks, De’Anthony Melton, Jarrett Culver, Yves Pons), Zaire Williams (ankle), and Santi Aldama (calf) are questionable for Monday.. Sam Merrill (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
With all due respect to the Celtics and Bucks fan bases, the most entertaining match of Christmas Day featured the best two teams in the league — the Warriors and Suns.
The back and forth affair featured 12 lead changes but despite being undermanned the Warriors were the team who executed in clutch time. Jae Crowder’s 3-pointer at 3:01 to pull Phoenix within two points was the last bucket the Suns would score.
It’s not panic time, but considering the top nine rotational players were active while three of the top four Dubs’ scorers (Wiggins, Poole, Lee) were out plus Klay Thompson it should at the very least raise some questions about the Suns’ depth or rather, their versatility.
Devin Booker took some awkward shots and falls on Saturday and came up holding his knee after one play. Although the announcers said maybe he bumped knees it looked to me like he stepped on Kevon Looney’s foot likely causing him to tweak both his ankle and knee.
Booker had a rough shooting day scoring 13 points on 5 of 19 while Chris Paul was the most effective Suns player with 21 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
Deandre Ayton had 18 points and seven rebounds, Mikal Bridges shadowed Stephen Curry plus offered 17 points and six rebounds while Cameron Johnson scored 11 as the only reserve to reach double-digits.
After avoiding protocols for the better part of the season Jae Crowder and Elfrid Payton both entered on Sunday. Abdel Nader (knee) is out while Frank Kaminsky (knee), and Dario Saric (knee) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 2-8 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
It’s not typical for the Suns to lose consecutive games. In fact, they’ve only done it once this season but the Grizzlies are an opponent who could shift that stat.
The Suns can have issues with lengthy or athletic opponents especially combined with stellar defense. At their best, the Grizzlies are all those things.
The other factor is the virus – once one player on the team contracts it, typically several more follow within days. Something else I’ve noted is many players perform below-average in the game prior to testing positive.
So while I might hedge on who gets the “W” I like Memphis to keep it closer than eight points and maybe even steal the “W”.
