Memphis Grizzlies
Just prior to their first Christmas Game, the Grizzlies seem to have a stocking stuffer ready to share as Desmond Bane was upgraded to questionable for Friday.
Bane was expected to be out until the New Year but this news was also hinted at by Danny Green to Brian Windhorst when he visited NBA Today so it’s legit.
The question is whether the Grizzlies will want to risk playing him in the game prior to the big event. In fact, I’m curious whether Memphis will play Morant who lobbied the hardest for Memphis to be part of the marquee Christmas slate.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 115.4 points per game ranking eighth overall. Memphis shoots 46.7% from the field ranking 16th, and 35.2% from the perimeter ranking 17th.
Since Jaren Jackson Jr. has returned the Grizzlies have made huge strides defensively owning the best opponent field goal percentage of 44.7%, rank ninth for opponents scoring 111.2 points, and are in the middle of the pack for perimeter percentage limiting foes to 35.7% from deep (15th).
Bane (toe) is questionable while Danny Green (knee) is out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
Booker is averaging 28.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists. He’s shooting 47.7 percent from the floor on 21.1 field goal attempts, 37.0 percent from the perimeter on 6.5 attempts, and 85 percent from the charity stripe on 6.4 attempts per game.
Opponents score 110.7 points ranking seventh while they limit their foes’ shooting to 46.9% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking 15th and 24th respectively.
As for their offense, Phoenix still ranks high but they’ve slipped dramatically from where they were through the initial month to six weeks of play when they ranked in the top three of all these categories.
After the recent swoon, they are averaging 115.7 points per game which rank sixth, holding opponents to 47.1% from the field and 37.8% from the perimeter ranking 15th and seventh respectively.
Through the last six matches, Devin Booker (groin) missed four games, sitting in the second game of the baseball set in New Orleans and against Houston then returned for two (Clippers and third match versus Pels) and sat the last two (Lakers Wizards).
It begs the question if he’s resting up in order to play on Christmas Day.
Other injury news includes Jock Landale (concussion protocol) and Josh Okogie (hip) as questionable while Cameron Payne (foot) is out Friday. Jae Crowder (trade request) and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Grizzlies are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games.
- The Suns are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Grizzlies are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games on the road.
- The Suns are 3-6 SU in their last 9 games.
- The Grizzlies are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games against Phoenix.
- The Suns are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games when hosting Memphis.
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
This is the most difficult to pick for Friday because of the uncertainty about who’ll play. With Memphis finally getting featured in a Christmas Game and because Steph Curry is out its important one superstar arrives healthy.
And while the more important goal is to try to win the Conference (en route to their title chase) it’s also understandable why the franchise (and league) would want to put on a good show in their prime-time Christmas Day game.
Of note, Morant isn’t even listed on the injury report but I just have a feeling the Grizz will be extra cautious with this match to ensure he gets to the Chase Center healthy.
All this to say – I’m still taking the Grizzlies – hey they’re deep and my guess is they try to punch Phoenix in the mouth from the tip, and build a big lead so they can rest their key players for Sunday.
