Monday night NBA features two teams headed in opposite directions.
The New Orleans Pelicans have shown improvement after a dreadful start, while the Memphis Grizzlies are trying to stay afloat after the loss of star point guard Mike Conley.
*Statistics, rankings and trends are current as of this writing at 4:30 p.m ET on Sunday, Dec. 4 2016.
The Memphis Grizzlies haven’t instantly dropped off the map following the loss of Conley to fractures in his back.
They enter this contest with a two-game winning streak, but those two wins have come against the Orlando Magic (one of the league’s worst teams) and the Los Angeles Lakers (also battered with injuries).
Against New Orleans, the goal will be to find consistent, steady play from the point guard position.
Andrew Harrison was the starter in the most recent win against the Lakers, and although he recorded six points, four assists and four rebounds, efficiency was a problem, as he was the only starter with a negative plus/minus and he shot just 2-of-7 from the field (1-of-5 from the three-point line).
On the year, Memphis has been one of the league’s strongest teams on defense. It’s giving up just 98.3 points per game, which puts them at fifth in the league.
Offense, however, has been problematic. The Grizzlies are just 27th in points per game scored at 97.5 per night.
Losing Conley is a problem on both sides of the court, but he’s the team’s leading scorer at 19.2 points per night, which is a lot to make up on a roster already not known for scoring.
New Orleans Pelicans
Anthony Davis is a super-mega-ultra-(insert any other hyperbole that applies here) superstar. But he can’t do everything on his own, which is why the return of Jrue Holiday has been so crucial for this Pelicans squad.
Since Jrue Holiday’s return on Nov. 18, the point guard is averaging 16.1 points and six assists per contest.
He’s shooting an efficient 47.7 percent from the field and a dangerous 43.8 percent from the three-point line.
More importantly is the fact that this team is 5-3 since his return.
On the year, New Orleans is posting 102.5 points per contest. That’s only good enough for this team to rank 22nd in the Association.
Defensively, the Pellies are giving up 105.4 points per night. That’s good enough for 17th in the league, but puts the team at a net minus 2.9 on the year.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. New Orleans Pelicans NBA Prediction:
The Grizzlies are a completely different team without Conley. The Pelicans are a completely different team with Holiday.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: NOLA ATS
New Orleans is not the better team, nor is it the more talented team. But at this point in the process, it’s the team that’s easier to trust, as surprising as that may be.
