Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Grizzlies losing 120-122 to the Warriors while the Wolves defeated the Pelicans 111-102.
Last season, the squads played four times each winning twice. The Wolves hold the slim 52-51 edge in victories all-time.

Memphis Grizzlies
Segments about the Grizzlies typically touch on Mr. Box Office (Ja Morant), Jaren Jackson Jr’s defensive prowess, Desmond Bane’s rapid growth, and Dillon Brooks’ old-school gritty “opponents aren’t my friends” approach to the game.
Yet, the starter who might be the key cog in the grand scheme of things is Steven Adams. Box score’s don’t show how many body-jarring screens he sets or how opponents frequently are less successful in the paint due to his presence.
His absence was clearly felt Wednesday, particularly on the glass where Adams league-leading 5.1 offensive rebounds were sorely missed. Memphis ranks first in total (48.7) and offensive boards (13.3) but the smaller Dubs won both battles on Wednesday.
Those boards offer second-chance scoring opportunities on one end and quick transition outlets on the other. But Memphis will need to figure things out without him for the foreseeable future…

Offensively, the Grizzlies score 117.1 points per game (5th) shooting 47.0% from the field (19th) and 34.9% from the perimeter (22nd). Memphis possesses the best opponent field goal percentage of 44.7%. and rank 12th on the perimeter 35.7% while allowing 112.4 points per game ranking 13th.
One positive on the injury front is Danny Green is expected to make his return on February 1st versus the Blazers. Meanwhile, John Konchar (concussion) and Desmond Bane (knee) are questionable for Friday.
Minnesota Timberwolves
In contrast to the Grizz, the Wolves have seemingly turned a corner winning 9 of 13 in 2023. Anthony Edwards has ascended as the primary option averaging 26.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.5 steals while shooting 36.7 percent on 8.4 deep balls in those 13 contests.
Early in the season, Edwards complained about feeling shackled by the lack of floor spacing and seemed to suggest Gobert clogging the paint was a big part of the problem.
The results sort of confirm Edwards’ insights as the Wolves are 6-3 without Gobert in the lineup and 5-2 without both him and Karl-Anthony Towns – – significantly better win margins than the Wolves’ 50% season average.
It begs the question of whether Tim Connelly will attempt to make some tweaks given Edwards definitely looks ready to assume the helm and that might require moving on from one or both of their big men.

Minnesota opponents score 115.4 points per game (19th) while shooting 46.7% from the field (9th) and 37.2% from deep (26th). On offense the Wolves score 115.2 points per game (11th), shooting 49.2% from the field (4th) and 35.4% from the perimeter (19th).
Rudy Gobert (groin) and Taurean Prince (ankle) are questionable while calf injuries continue to keep KAT and Jordan McLaughlin sidelined. until mid-January.
