Sunday, January 9th finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the fourth and final time this season. LA won once on October 24th (121-118) while the Grizzlies took the December 9th (108-95) and 29th (104-99) matches.
Memphis is playing the back-to-back Crypto.com having defeated the Clippers 123-108 on Saturday while the Lakers arrive having pummeled the Hawks 134-118 on Friday.
All-time the Lakers hold the advantage winning 61 of 98 matches. Last season the teams played three times with the Lakers sweeping the season series.
Memphis Grizzlies
Vegas sure hasn’t been a fan of the Grizzlies who just keep on winning. If you invested in Memphis this past week or two you could’ve made a tidy little sum as they were underdogs versus the Cavs and Nets and favored by a meager 3.5 points versus the Clippers.
The only bloated spread was against the Pistons (12.5 points) and they pummeled them by 30. The last time they played the Lakers they were 4.5 favorites and won by five points which is the closest they’ve been to any spread during the streak.
What made the defeat of the Clippers all the more impressive is they were missing Ja Morant (thigh), Steven Adams (COVID) head coach Tayler Jenkins (protocols) and Dillon Brooks sprained his ankle, seven minutes into the match.
It made no difference as Jaren Jackson Jr. feasted with 26 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and five blocks. Brandon Clarke reminded how deep the Grizzlies bench is posting a double-double of 18 points, 15 rebounds (7 OR), three assists, and three blocks.
Desmond Bane was questionable with a sore quad but suited up adding 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block while Tyus Jones offered 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
This Grizzlies squad is young, athletic, deep and THEY BELIEVE!
Morant, Brooks, Adams, Kyle Anderson/John Konchar/Xavier Tillman (protocols) are among the eight players all listed as questionable.
Los Angeles Lakers
Sure the Lakers have won four games in a row and they can only play who is on the court.
BUT – – I’m having a hard time getting as amped up as some of the Lake Show faithful over victories against the Blazers, Kings, Wolves, or Hawks.
All four were missing either their star or starters/core contributors. Not to mention the Blazers (30th), Kings (27th), and Hawks (26th) have five of the worst defenses in the association.
As I noted in the last preview until we get to see the Lakers play a top-eight club or at least a team with a winning record to gauge how effective playing LeBron James at center will work, the jury remains out on this new lucky winning “scheduling” win-streak.
And unfortunately, that might not be today based on the lengthy injury list posted by Memphis.
Notably, LeBron is listed on the injury report as probable with that same abdominal issue which begs the question if this is a lingering problem or Frank Vogel is trying to play into the minds of the opposition. Anthony Davis (MCL) will miss at least a month to six weeks while Kendrick Nunn (knee) is out indefinitely.

During the win streak, the Grizzlies averaged 116.5 points, limited opponents to 103.1 points for a margin of victory of 13.3 points. They’ve been the most entertaining nightly game with Morant rising to superstardom with Bane, Jackson, Clarke, and Brooks earning a deserved reputation as the most exciting young NBA squad.
Although they enter on the back-to-back with the prospect of missing eight players including Morant, Adams, Brooks, and Anderson (all four started in the last Lakers match) until they fail to cover the spread how can you bet against them?
During the four-game streak, LA is averaging 125.7 points (again note the opponent defenses), allowed 110.2 points for a 15.5 differential. Notably, in the seven prior games LA average 106.8 points, allowed 117.4 points for a negative differential of -10.3 points
One caveat – not having Adams could pose a problem and the Lakers were on a back-to-back last time whereas the Grizzlies are this time but Jones was the only Grizzly to play over 30 minutes on Saturday.
