Tuesday, January 4th the Memphis Grizzlies face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second and final time this season. Memphis won the initial contest this season 131-121 on October 20th.
Memphis are playing a back-to-back set having pummeled Brooklyn on the front side while the Cavaliers played Sunday beating the Pacers 108-104.
All-time the Cavaliers have the advantage winning 31 of 50 matches with the teams splitting their matches last season each winning on the opposing court.
This is the seventh back-to-back set the Grizzlies are playing this season and they’ve had mixed results. Through the first 13 games the Grizzlies were less effective on the front side (3-4) and even on the second game (3-3)..
Ja Morant is making a strong case to be a first-time all-star leading his team in scoring with 24.7 points and in assists (6.6). The youngster has improved his perimeter stroke shooting 40.0 percent on 4.4 attempts which is up from 30.3% on 3.8 attempts last season.
Anyone doubting his All-Star worthiness got an impressive display Monday as he systematically broke down the Nets and delivered a tomahawk dunk that blew up social media.
While many thought it was a downgrade to bring in big man Steven Adams for Jonas Valanciunas the big Kiwi is proving to be a solid fit leading the team in rebounding with 9.1 per game including 4.9 on the offensive glass.
Perhaps the surprise is his playmaking abilities as hes averaging a career-best 2.9 assists per game.
Memphis ranks seventh on offense (111.4), tied for 14th on defense (108.7), and has a positive +2.7 net differential which ranks ninth.
Six Grizzlies in protocol are all listed as questionable for Tuesday including Kyle Anderson, Dillon Brooks, De’Anthony Melton, John Konchar, Xavier Tillman, and Shaq Buchanan.
Zaire Williams (ankle) is also questionable while Sam Merrill (ankle) is out indefinitely.
With the loss of Ricky Rubio and missing Darius Garland in protocols the Cavaliers needed others to step up and rookie Evan Mobley embraced the challenge leading his squad with 24 points and nine rebounds in the victory versus the Pacers.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Cleveland who fell to Pelicans, Wizards and Hawks last week.
Veteran Kevin Love is having a resurgent season as he scored 20 points a mark he’s hit in each of his last five games. Back from protocols Jarrett Allen registered a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds with three blocks.
Lamar Stevens added a season-high (15) and Lauri Markkanen (12) were the other double-figure scorers. Isaac Okoro suffered an elbow injury forcing him from the match.
On the season the Cavaliers rank 13th on offense (110.0), third defensively (104.5), and register a positive +5.4 net differential which is the fourth highest mark in the association and best in the East.
Garland and Cedi Osman are still in protocols and questionable for Tuesday. Dylan Windler is nursing a knee injury and didn’t get any run on Sunday so he is questionable while Okoro is out at least a week or two with the elbow injury.
Rubio (torn ACL) and Collin Sexton (knee) are both lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Cavaliers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Grizzlies
- The over/under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction
If Garland can’t go it will be tough for the Cavs to contain Morant but they do have the rest advantage and size in the frontcourt to make things difficult for Memphis.
That said, Cleveland have looked a bit off kilter offensively without a point guard to create shots as the Cavs are in short supply of play makers.
