Monday, January 3rd, finds the Memphis Grizzlies facing the Brooklyn Nets in their first meeting of this campaign. Th teams will play once more in Memphis on March 23rd.
The Nets arrive following a loss to 120-116 loss to the Clippers on Saturday while the Grizzlies last played on Friday defeating the Spurs 118-105 extending their win streak to four games in a row.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Grizzlies taking both contests. The Grizzlies hold the advantage all-time having won 26 times of the club’s 49 meetings.
Memphis Grizzlies
In the victory versus the Spurs, the Grizzlies displayed their versatility and balanced roster. Big men Jaren Jackson Jr. (12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks) and Steven Adams (12 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two blocks) had near-identical double-doubles.
Ja Morant led the scoring effort with 30 points adding eight assists, and six rebounds. Desmond Bane chipped in 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block.
Tyus Jones scored 18 while Brandon Clarke flirted with becoming the third Grizzly double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds adding two assists and two blocks.
Memphis ranks seventh on offense (111.4), tied for 14th on defense (108.7), and has a positive +2.7 net differential which ranks ninth.
Kyle Anderson, Dillon Brooks, De’Anthony Melton, John Konchar, Xavier Tillman, Shaq Buchanan were all downgraded to out Monday. Jarrett Culver was the only player in protocols listed as probable. Zaire Williams (ankle) is doubtful while Sam Merrill (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Brooklyn Nets
For the first time this season, the Nets lost two games in a row. Losing to the 76ers wasn’t anything to be concerned about given Joel Embiid is an imposing force and Brooklyn doesn’t have a big to contain him.
More concerning was the loss to the depleted Clippers who played a tough match (losing to the Raptors) the night prior.
Heading into that game I noted the benefit the Nets had with LA having to fly into New York on New Year’s Eve although I did note having James Harden in the big apple on the holiday could be equally concerning.
To that end, although Harden led the Nets in scoring with 34 points it came via an inefficient 9 of 22 including 3 of 11 from deep. The beard did deliver a triple-double adding 12 rebounds and 13 assists.
But his guard counterparts on LA absolutely smoked the Nets combining for 65 points from Eric Bledsoe (27), Reggie Jackson (19), and Terance Mann (19). Kevin Durant offered 28 points with nine rebounds.
LaMarcus Aldridge flirted with a double-double (10 points, nine rebounds) while Steve Nash elected to bring Nic Claxton off the bench who did register a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Patty Mills (17) was the only other Nets player to score in double-digits.
Brooklyn did what they should by winning the glass (57 to 40) but failed to capitalize on the Clippers’ poor paint defense tying them with 44 points in the paint and lost the fastbreak battle (21 to 5) and points scored off turnovers (17 to 11).
Brooklyn ranks 10th on offense (110.3), 5th on defense (106.9), and has a positive +3.4 net differential which ranks 8th.
Joe Harris (ankle surgery) is out indefinitely while Kyrie Irving is conditioning in his return from quarantine but can only play in games on the road.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Grizzlies are 12-6 ATS in their last 18 games.
- The Nets are 13-6 SU in their last 19 games.
- The Grizzlies are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games on the road.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Brooklyn’s last 8 games.
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
It’s unprecedented territory for the Nets who hadn’t lost consecutive games all season prior to this weekend and sure won’t want that tally to grow to three. The issue is this Grizzlies team won’t be an easy out given their athleticism, scoring versatility, and adaptability.
Phoenix had only lost consecutive games once this season but the Grizzlies beat them to make it twice so they’re happy to play the spoiler role.
Both of these teams rank higher defensively than perhaps is warranted so we’ll see which team does better at limiting the opposing stars — my money is on the Grizzlies dominating the glass and winning the game.
