Wednesday, December 28th, finds the Los Angeles Lakers facing the Miami Heat in the first of two scheduled contests. LA will host the second contest on January 4th.
The Lakers are completing a back-to-back Florida set that ran through Orlando on Tuesday resulting in a 129-110 win versus the Magic while the Heat played Monday defeating the Wolves 113-110.
All time the Lakers have the advantage of winning 38 of 68 matches versus the Heat. Last season the teams split their two matches each winning on their home court.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Tuesday evening, December 27th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, December 28th.
Los Angeles Lakers
In two days LeBron James will turn 38. Although he’s far from the typical NBA player as Charles Barkley is quick to remind us, there is no defeating Father time.
The King has already defied the odds, reportedly spending a million dollars a year on keeping his health and body in the best possible condition. But eventually, no amount of money will make a difference which is why he’s so keen to compete for titles now.
The problem is this Lakers team is far from a contender even with Anthony Davis healthy.
The Lakers are currently on a five-game road trip with stops still to come in Atlanta and Charlotte.
LA allows opponents to score an average of 117.8 points per game ranking 27th. Their opponents shoot 47.2% from the field (17th) and 35.1% from behind the arc (9th).
The Lakers score 116.1 points per game (6th) while shooting 48.0 percent from the field and 33.8 percent from the perimeter ranking eighth and 26th respectively.
Anthony Davis (foot) and Juan Toscano-Anderson (ankle) are out.
Miami Heat
Although it seemed like the Heat were beginning to find their groove, their offense has hit a wall and even the typically stellar defense isn’t performing up to par.
After two losses, the victory versus the Wolves helped but Miami has fallen to eighth on the ladder tied with the Hawks. They’re a half-game back of both the Pacers and Knicks, two games up on the Raptors, and 2.5 on the Bulls.
Offensively, the Heat score 108.1 points per game (30th rank) shooting 45.2% from the field (27th) and 34.1% from the perimeter (24th).
Defensively, the Heat allow opponents to score 109.2 points per game ranking fourth. Miami opponents shoot 47.5% from the field and 36.2% from the perimeter ranking 21st and 18th respectively.
Caleb Martin (ankle) is probable, Jimmy Butler (ankle), Bam Adebayo (shoulder sprain), Gabe Vincent (knee), and Udonis Haslem (Achilles) are all questionable for Wednesday. Dewayne Dedmon (plantar fasciitis and. Omer Yurtseven (ankle surgery) are out.

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Both teams are desperate to win and will be eyeing the other side with the belief they can draw the ‘W’. At season start LA relied on their defense to help them win but without Anthony Davis, they’re pushing the offense.
Miami always is defense-first albeit with Butler and Adebayo in and out of the lineup it’s been a tough task to deliver. More concerning is how poor their offense is and that may be the greater concern in this contest.
I’m leaning Heat given the rest advantage, but much depends on who plays so keep on eye on late injury report updates because if Jimmy and Bam don’t play I’d shift to the Lakers and the points.
