Tuesday, December 27th, the LA Clippers and Toronto Raptors meet for the first of two scheduled matches this season. LA will host the second meeting on March 8th.
Toronto last played Friday becoming the first Eastern Conference team to beat the Cavaliers (118-107) on their home court and ending their five-game win streak while the Clippers got more than they counted on having to beat the Pistons in overtime (142-131) on Monday.
LA Clippers
Last season, the teams played twice with the Raptors winning both contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 29 of their 52 matches.
The Clippers became the ninth team to reach the 20-win mark although it took a more concerted effort than expected. In a wild game of ebbs and flows LA led by 15 points then coughed up a double-digit lead needing to fight to push the game to extra frames.
Kawhi Leonard sat since LA is still only playing him on one side of back-to-back sets and presumably deemed Toronto the harder opponent.
Presently, they sit 29th for scoring averaging 108.7 points per game shooting 46.4% from the field (21st) and 37.1% from deep (8th).
Defensively, the Clippers rank top five in all three major categories allowing 108.5 points per game (3rd) shooting at 45.3% from the field (2nd) and 34.3% from deep (5th).
Toronto Raptors
Last week the Raptors proved just how precarious a team’s positioning is and how quickly the narrative can shift. Despite navigating copious injuries to their core and hovering around .500 Toronto had underachieved through 30 games.
They entered week 10 on a downward slide following some out-of-character losses which sparked a deluge of media analysts and experts suggesting the team may blow things up and start fresh.
The problem of course was the players (O.G. Anunoby, Pascal Siakam) they were suggesting should be traded for this rebuild were precisely the prototype Masai Ujiri would need to find in younger versions.
The goal entering the season was to remain competitive, continue developing the core, and gauge what the ceiling of that core is.
The issue was they’ve yet to be healthy enough to answer those questions. They’ve used 17 different starting lineups and missed two key contributors (Precious Achiuwa and Otto Porter Jr.) for 21 and 25 games in addition to the time Pascal Siakam and other starters were out.
So, the ‘blow it up stance’ struck me as agent-fed or opponent GM desired plants because the team hadn’t been able to establish any sense of chemistry or reinforce their identity due to the injuries.
For those who don’t think continuity matters? Consider the Bucks who sat atop the East possessing the third-best opening quarter differential. But, a spat of injuries forced them to utilize different lineups in each of the last three games. They lost all three games as well as the opening quarters of all three matches.
Whether the Raptor players took offense to the media suggestion of blowing up the club and rebuilding or it was simply luck Toronto discovered something in the overtime loss to the 76ers and followed it up by ending the Knicks and Cavaliers’ winning streaks of eight and five games.
Some good news on the injury front is Gary Trent Jr. isn’t on the injury report and Precious Achiuwa (ankle) was upgraded to doubtful indicating he’s close to a return while Otto Porter Jr. (toe) remains out.

Free LA Clippers vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Toronto has the benefit of rest and being at home. But they also can struggle to defend the perimeter and succumb to segments of stagnating offense. I’ll take LA and the points but suspect Toronto will inch out the win.
