Monday, January 10th, 2022, the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics play for the first time this season. This is the first of a home and home series with Indiana hosting on Wednesday while the clubs will play twice more, once on each team’s home court with Indiana hosting on February 27th and Boston on April 1st.
Both teams played Saturday with Indiana defeating the Jazz 125-113 who elected to rest all but one rotational player versus the Raptors on Friday saving their core for the Pacers but collected two losses anyway.
The Celtics got their payback for coughing up a 25 point lead to the Knicks on Thursday by winning the second of the home and home series, 99-75.
In history, the Celtics own the advantage winning 101 of the clubs’ 182 meetings. Last season the teams played three times with the Celtics winning two of the three contests.
Indiana Pacers
Imagine if Kevin Pritchard had the epiphany to reunite Lance Stephenson and Rick Carlisle weeks ago, Where would the Pacers be now? And I’m only half-joking because clearly, that duo has a history and bond, but more importantly, Lance has seemingly unlocked the passion and energy the Pacers were missing.
It’s his third stint with Indiana where he created copious memories like blowing in LeBron James’ ear or his on-court antics like playing the air guitar after hitting clutch shots or preferring to hang out by Larry Bird and avoid the Pacers bench friction (for those unaware look up the Paul George – Roy Hibbert beef).
The enigmatic wingman understands Carlisle probably better than any of his teammates. His double-double of 16 points and career-high 14 assists plus six rebounds and four steals were great but perhaps most importantly it’s like he’s injected the entire roster with energy and showing them how to have fun again.
The other clear advantage is the recipient of most of Stephenson’s dimes was Domantas Sabonis who collected a career-best 42 points.
Whether the reliance on the duo’s pick and roll sets continues when Malcolm Brogdon and Caris LeVert return is anyone’s guess but Carlisle got a first-hand look at how he could better utilize Domo (something he hasn’t done to its full extent).
Five Pacers are in protocols with Caris LeVert, Isaiah Jackson, and Goga Bitadze questionable while Malcolm Brogdon and Justin Anderson are ruled out Monday. Torrey Craig (groin) is also questionable while TJ McConnell (wrist) and TJ Warren (foot) are out indefinitely.
Boston Celtics
There have been times I’ve wondered if Jaylen Brown’s two-way talent makes him the more attractive of the two stars in Bean Town. Aside from his tendency for injury and Tatum perhaps being a tad more clutch-worthy there is much to admire about Brown’s game.
Plus it seems the duo has never figured out how to thrive simultaneously. While Tatum had the big night in New York (albeit in the loss) it was Brown who had the better performance in Boston posting his first career triple-double of 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.
Yet, his postgame comments had me wondering if he listens to his own answers and how contradictory they are.— case in point:
In referring to coughing up the 25 point lead in New York “Any time you blow a lead like that, you’re not going to forget it. We learned from that experience. That’s all it is.” WAIT – – WHAT? If that was true then why did it take coughing up 19 (or more) point leads on four separate occasions?
He also contradicted himself in the same statement telling reporters he’s not trying to stat chase (triple-doubles) and finished the same sentence with “I’m looking to get a lot more.”
The quartet of Tatum (19), Josh Richardson (17), Robert Williams (12), and Marcus Smart (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Payton Pritchard (quarantine) and Brodric Thomas (back) are questionable for Saturday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Celtics are 8-2 in the last 10 head to head
- The Celtics are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Indiana Pacers vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Neither club has delivered to expectations although both have provided glimpses of their potential. Robert Williams will have his hands full dealing with the Pacers bigs but the Celtics wings will have a decided advantage with Brogdon out and possibly LeVert inactive.
The big question is whether “Born Ready” (Stephenson) can keep fueling the Pacers’ newfound swagger.
