Houston Rockets vs. LA Lakers Odds & Last 5
For the past two campaigns, the Lakers have won the regular-season series, two games to one versus the Rockets.
There is a long-storied history of postseason meetings between these clubs as they’ve met on nine previous occasions. LA has won on six of those occasions, including the last time they tipped off in 2020.
To finish the season, the Rockets hit their stride, winning nine of their last 10 matches. LA had won 13 of 14 but then got hit by injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves, and the team finished 3-3 through the final six contests.
Houston is favored by 4.5 points with an over/under of 206 points.

Houston Rockets vs. LA Lakers bottom line:
Breaking down the game statistics should have Ime Udoka shaking his head. While the Lakers won the game, almost all the numbers are in favor of the Rockets:
- Houston took 27 more shots than the Lakers
- The Rockets forced 20 turnovers, leading to 24 points
- They were monsters on the glass, outrebounding LA by nine overall, but more importantly, took the offensive glass 21 to 3!!!
- They took the steals category 13 to 7
- Houston also won the fast break, scoring 11 to 4
- The Rockets’ reserves outscored LA 22 to 13
Bottom line – when you put up numbers like that and take that many key categories, teams win the game 99.9% of the time.
While Houston may not emulate that performance, one thing is for certain – they need to be better offensively and score the ball.

Rockets Lakers Free Pick: Rockets -4.5
Here is my Rockets Lakers free pick.
Clearly, not having Kevin Durant was a problem, but to witness how much the Rockets struggled offensively without him was a bit surprising. It’s uncertain if KD will be back for Game 2, but the Rockets need more from all their players in Game 2 if they don’t want to fall into a 2-0 hole.
As for LA, LeBron James reached into the well and pulled out another major performance. He orchestrated how the game would flow and put his teammates into position to succeed, with players like Luke Kennard and Deandre Ayton each excelling.
The question is: Can LBJ pull another rabbit out of the hat, or will the Rockets be able to translate their statistical brilliance into a win?
Bench scoring will be a struggle for both squads as the Rockets reserves rank 30th in scoring while the Lakers reserves rank 29th.
Udoka should look to change Okogie off LeBron and either utilize Amen Thompson or Tari Eason because if the Rockets can slow or limit LBJ even a bit, they’ll be in much better shape.
Both Reed Sheppard (6 of 20) and Alperen Sengun (6 of 19) need to be better offensively. Neither is going to be in the running for All-Defense, so they need to deliver up to their potential offensively.
All of this could be a moot point if Durant plays. And that alone makes this a hard choice because we won’t know until closer to the game whether KD will play or not.
I’m going to lean into KD being back (it’s a gut guess but check closer to game time because if he’s out, I might take the points), so I’ll roll with Houston winning and covering.
