Sunday, January 15th, finds the Houston Rockets facing the LA Clippers for the fourth and final time this season. The Clippers will be seeking a regular season series sweep having won October 31st (95-93), November 2nd (109-101), and 14th (122-106)
Both teams last played on Friday with the Rockets losing 114-139 to the Kings while the Clippers lost 103-115 to the Jokic-less Nuggets.
All-time the Rockets have the advantage of winning 124 of 212 matches versus LA. Last season the teams met three times with the Clippers sweeping the series.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Saturday, evening, January 14th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Sunday, January 15th.
Houston Rockets
The team with the best odds of winning the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes is the Rockets. Technically they are one of the three teams since the bottom trio in the association all get an equal 14 percent shot at that top draft pick.
While that is precisely Houston’s objective at the same time the front office wants to see their young squad make some strides and that’s where they might be coming up short.
Sure, their youngsters are getting tons of experience but when you’re constantly losing its not simple to just flip a switch and start winning. Even the Pistons and Spurs who have the worst defenses in the league have more wins than Houston.
Offense
Offensively, the Rockets score 109.3 points per game ranking 28th overall. Houston shoots 44.4% from the field which is the worst in the league and 33.0% from the perimeter ranking 28th overall.
Defensively, the Rockets allow opponents to score 116.9 points per game which rank 24th overall, while Houston’s foes shoot 47.4% and 36.7% from the perimeter ranking 21st and 26th respectively.
At the present time, Kevin Porter Jr. (foot) is doubtful.
LA Clippers
There were flashes of what the Clippers could be recently when Kawhi Leonard and Paul George were both healthy. In December they registered a stretch of 7-2 including an impressive 20-point victory over the Celtics.
But this was followed by a six-game losing streak with Leonard and PG13 each missing two games but only one where both were out. They ended the losing streak with a quality win versus the Mavericks but were no match for a Nuggets team who were missing Nikola Jokic.
As I noted previously Ty Lue’s main issue is how his supporting cast adapts to Leonard and George being in and out of the lineup. On top of needing reps to develop chemistry, their roles are constantly changing depending on who is playing.
Stats
Presently, they sit 29th for scoring averaging 109.1 points per game shooting 46.1% from the field and 36.8% from the perimeter ranking 23rd and ninth respectively.
Defensively, the Clippers’ opponents average 110.1 points per game which is the fourth lowest overall while allowing opponents to shoot 46.2% from the field (5th) and 34.3% from the perimeter (4th).

Per the John Wall dunk above – right afterward he was grabbing at his abdomen which speaks to the age of this group’s core. To that end, (shocker) he’s listed as doubtful (abdomen) as is Marcus Morris Sr., (knee).
At the present time, Moussa Diabate (illness) is questionable, while Paul George (hamstring) and Luke Kennard (calf) are out.
