For the first time of this young season, the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets face each other. The Rockets were the last team to open their season after several players couldn’t dress for the first game on the schedule forcing a postponement.
Last season, the squads played four times splitting the season series. The Rockets hold the all-time record having won 102 matches of the 190 played.
Houston Rockets
It’s been a rough start for the Rockets this year given all the drama off the court. Superstar James Harden has demanded a trade but is taking things to an entirely different level to drive home his point.
Harden spent time in Vegas and Atlanta partying instead of showing up to training camp. Upon his arrival, the antics continued when the franchise didn’t immediately expedite his trade demands.
It culminated in a fine of $50k and quarantine plus the postponement of the home opener because his teammates were dealing with COVID-19 issues of their own.
The Rockets finally tipped off the season versus the Blazers with only nine players dressed including the majority of their core.
Despite the disadvantage and two-point loss Harden’s mindset once he laced them up was business as usual as he delivered a 44 point, 17 assists double-double. Christian Wood also posted a double-double (31 points, 13 rebounds).
Jae’Sean Tate (13), Danuel House Jr. (11), Sterling Brown (10), and David Nwaba (10) were the other double-digit contributors.
Things won’t improve on Monday as John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Ben McLemore, Eric Gordon, Mason Jones, and Kenyon Martin Jr. are all out with COVID-19 related issues.
Denver Nuggets
While the Nuggets battled back in the match versus the Clippers it proved to be too little, too late.
Jamal Murray has been hampered by a sore calf which is contributing to his scoring struggles to start the season. He scored a mere nine points in the opening match and was cold again early versus the Clippers.
The Canadian found his range and touch late in the match which resulted in the microwave scorer finishing with 23 points, three assists, and five rebounds.
Nikola Jokic who delivered a 29 point, 14 assists, 15 rebound triple-double in the season opener came one rebound shy of repeating the feat. He finished with 24 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds.
Will Barton (15), Monte Morris (13), and Michael Poter Jr. (10) were the other double-figure contributors. Notably, MPJ was off the floor when the Nuggets made their run in the latter stages of the match as his defense is still a work in progress.
Part of the defensive issues for the Nuggets is they are missing JaMychal Green who hasn’t played yet due to a calf injury and won’t be available Monday. Greg Whittington (knee) is also out again.
