Tuesday, December 27th, the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics play the first of two scheduled meetings this season. Houston will host the second meeting on March 13th.
The Rockets are completing a back-to-back set having pounded the Bulls 133-118 on Monday while the Celtics last played Christmas Day routing the Bucks 139-118.
The Celtics hold the all-time record between the clubs with 94 wins in 149 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with the Celtics taking both contests.
Houston Rockets
Just prior to the first game of the Christmas slate getting underway, Woj hit us with a whopper regarding James Harden potential desire to return to Houston.
Even though the colorfully clad Harden said there was no truth to it post-game it’s not the type of information Woj would arbitrarily drop.
It’s likely as simple as having this suggestion exist to aid in negotiating a max deal but still seems odd given how close Daryl Morey and Harden are and the lengths the exec has gone to in order to make his star happy.
From the Rockets perspective, this team is being built around Jalen Green and a group of young talents so it’s also not a given the new face of the franchise would be thrilled to turn over the reigns to the former star who would undoubtedly want them.
Offensively, the Rockets score 110.2 points per game (28th) shooting 44.7 percent from the field (29th) and 33.2 percent from the perimeter (28th).
Defensively, the Rockets allow opponents to score 115.4 points per game (21st), while Houston’s foes shoot 47.5% and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 19th and 22nd respectively.
Eric Gordon (thumb) and Jae’Sean Tate (ankle) were both questionable for Monday but only Gordon played. Since they’re playing on consecutive days and the injury report hasn’t been submitted as of posting it’s best to assume both are questionable for Tuesday.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics have won two in-a-row seemingly moving past the brief blip that witnessed them lose five of six matches. The Christmas event was particularly satisfying as the Bucks had briefly overtaken Boston at the top of the East but are dealing with their own losing streak now.
The Celtics defense on Giannis Antetokounmpo was suffocating while MVP frontrunner Jayson Tatum appeared to get whatever he wanted with no resistance from the defensive minded Bucks.
Tatum led the Celtics in the victory with 41 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while Jaylen Brown offered 29 points.
The Celtics’ recent struggles are reflected in the stats and while they’ve reclaimed the best point production average of 118.7 points per game their efficiency has suffered some regression.
Boston is shooting 47.9% from the field and 37.9% from the perimeter ranking eighth and sixth respectively.
While there is still work to be done defensively, they are showing signs of improvement on that end with opponents averaging 112.4 points (13th), 46.7% field goal shooting (13th), and 35.1% from the perimeter (9th).
Marcus Smart (hip inflammation) is probable. Danilo Gallinari (ACL repair) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Rockets are 1-5 SU in their last 6 games.
- Celtics are 13-7 SU in their last 20 games.
- Rockets are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against Boston.
- Celtics are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games played on a Tuesday.
Free Houston Rockets vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Seven of Houston’s 10 wins are against teams with winning records while seven of the Celtics 10 losses are against teams with .500 or worse records.
And while the Rockets played Monday, only two players logged more than 35 minutes so Boston has to be careful not to fall into that trap yet again.
