Saturday, January 1st the Golden State Warriors plays the Utah Jazz for the first time this season. Utah will host once more on February 9th while the Warriors will host games on January 23rd, and April 2nd
Golden State has been idle since Tuesday when they lost a defensive slugfest 86-89 to the Nuggets while the Jazz is playing the second night of a back-to-back set having easily dispensed (120-108) of the shorthanded Timberwolves on Friday.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Warriors winning two of the three contests. The Jazz holds the all-time record with 113 wins in 191 matches versus the Warriors.
Golden State Warriors
As the league nears the true halfway mark the Warriors and Suns have looked a little more human of late with the dog days of winter taking a toll.
Between trying to keep winning streaks alive or chasing history both clubs have been center stage most of the season. And having played each other twice in quick order perhaps subconsciously they took their foot off the gas (even if only slightly).
Certainly, Stephen Curry’s pursuit of the 3-point record added attention and it wasn’t all positive as the weight of the moment seemingly impacted everyone on the team.
The Warriors’ free-flowing offense was NOT ever-present and it showed in the win/loss column with Golden State collecting five losses in 13 games compared to just two through the initial 20 games.
Plus the entire league is under attack by the omicron variant and that too is taking a toll with one of the most recent victims being Draymond Green.
Not that there is reason to get overly concerned as even when the Warriors struggle offensively the defense is on point. The trick for Steve Kerr is not overtaxing Curry, Green, Iggy or Wiggins while the team awaits Klay Thompson’s return as well as James Wiseman.
Green is questionable for Saturday while Damion Lee is out indefinitely as the only Warriors still in protocols.
Utah Jazz
While the Suns and Warriors have been the clubs getting most of the shine, the Jazz sits right behind them and not just in the West but are third-best in the NBA.
The difference is until the Jazz delivers in the postseason which means making it to the Western Conference Finals at a bare minimum, they won’t be taken as seriously.
That’s not to say they haven’t been exceptional – Utah ranks first both offensively (117) and in net differential (plus +10.3) and is tied with the Nets in fifth for their defense (106.7). They are also winning at almost an identical pace to last season when they held the top record.
Still, there are obvious areas of concern – the offense tends to get stuck in mud when Mike Conley rests, and given his injury history that’s a specific area of their depth the Jazz should address before the trade deadline.
Conley only plays once in back-to-backs and since he sat Friday he’ll be good for Saturday. Joe Ingles (back) is questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 6-4 in the team’s last 10 meetings
- The Jazz are 6-4 ATS in the team’s last 10 games versus each other
- The over/under is 8-2 in the team’s last 10 meetings
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Utah Jazz NBA Prediction:
The Warriors have the rest advantage, Utah has the home court with high altitude and is healthier overall. Ultimately, it comes down to one person — Draymond Green. Even though he gives up six inches most nights to his center counterparts he impacts winning.
If he plays Tuesday, tell me he doesn’t make at least a handful of plays that shifts the three-point deficit to a Warriors victory. Likewise, Gobert may tower over him but if he’s back I like the Dubs to win outright.
If he’s out I’m more partial to the Jazz covering. That said, I’m going with my gut that Draymond suits up.
