The Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors play the first of two scheduled matches with the second set for January 27th at Chase Center.
Both teams played Friday with the Warriors losing 118-106 in Philly while the Raptors lost another heartbreaker 116-119 to Brooklyn.
Last season, the squads played twice with both teams winning at home. The Warriors hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 30 of their 50 matches.

Golden State Warriors
Stephen Curry will miss a couple of weeks with a shoulder subligation but the Warriors are breathing a sigh of relief the injury wasn’t worse.
In a season of parity, Steve Kerr summed it up perfectly as the common strategy is to stay within reach then build momentum during the stretch run to peak at the perfect time…
“It doesn’t feel like anybody is running away with the West and as long as we can just stay within striking ran+ge we feel good about our team when we’re healthy.”
Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole tried to pick up the slack in Philly with the former struggling (4 of 17 for 12 points) and the latter scoring 29 points but also posting the worst plus/minus (-9) of the Dubs.
Draymond Green was also out while Andrew Wiggins missed his sixth consecutive game.
The Dubs average 117.0 points per game (5th) while shooting 47.6% from the field (13th) and 37.9% from deep (5th). Defensively, they rank 26th for opponent scoring (116.8) while shooting 46.6% from the field and 35.1% from deep ranking 13th in both.
Green (quad contusion) and Thompson (knee) are probable. Curry (shoulder), Wiggins (groin), and Andre Iguodala (hip) are out.
Toronto Raptors
While composing this post on Friday I was glancing at the standings and something jumped off the page. In the East, there are seven teams with a positive differential.
The top six seeds and the 10th-place Raptors. That single stat highlights the Raptors’ placement is likely far too low. And while there are no moral victories the Raptors have looked better in the last two matches losing by a single bucket in both.
Part of that improvement lies in Fred VanVleet shooting better (consecutive 39-point efforts) but the more obvious change is Scottie Barnes initiating more of the offense while playing an increased role in the post and it made a palpable difference.
The negative is without OG Anunoby, Pascal Siakam was forced into a bigger defensive role and subsequently wasn’t as active offensively. It’s another hurdle to overcome and perhaps he’s just willing to sacrifice more while OG is out.
On offense, the Raptors score 111.5 points per game (20th) shooting 45.1% from the field (26th) and 32.4% from deep (29th). Defensively, the Raptors allow 110.8 opponent points per game ranking (8th) while they shoot 48.8% (28th) from the field and 35.3% from deep (14th).
Gary Trent Jr. (quad) is questionable. The trio of Justin Champagnie, Jeff Dowtin Jr., and Ron Harper Jr., are all on G-League assignment and O.G. Anunoby (hip) remains out.
Precious Achiuwa (ankle) and Otto Porter Jr. (toe dislocation) will miss another two weeks and month respectively.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Warriors are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Raptors are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Warriors are 4-9 SU in their last 13 games against Toronto.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Toronto’s last 5 games at home.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
It seems unfathomable that it was just three years ago that the Warriors and Raptors played in the NBA Finals.
Since then the Warriors won their fourth title, while the Raptors survived COVID stuck in Tampa Bay with zero fans, albeit some would suggest the reward for that purgatory was essentially winning the lottery (Scottie Barnes).
Both teams’ focus is to compete for and win titles while simultaneously developing their youngsters to organically progress within their culture of winning.
As Kerr noted above, parity is helping, arguably more than ever. To that end, entering Friday, 11 teams in the West and 10 in the East were two games within .500 or better.
That 21 of 30 teams could still win their respective conferences at this stage of the season is unprecedented. Any given week can result in drastic fluctuations on the ladder. A mini-winning or losing streak can result in a four or five-rung swing.
Ultimately, it’s about teams navigating adversity (tough scheduling, injuries) and finding their groove at precisely the right time.
Both teams are hampered by injuries and both NEED this win but it feels like the Raptors need it more given how the losses to the Kings and Nets were by a cumulative four points and two shots.
